Blaxploitation or blacksploitation is an ethnic subgenre of the exploitation film that emerged in the United States during the early 1970s. The films, while popular, suffered backlash for disproportionate numbers of stereotypical film characters showing bad or questionable motives including criminals, etc. However, the genre does rank among the first in which black characters and communities are the heroes and subjects of film and television, rather than sidekicks or villains or victims of brutality. The genre's inception coincides with the rethinking of race relations in the 1970s. Blaxploitation films were originally aimed at an urban African-American audience, but the genre's audience appeal soon broadened across racial and ethnic lines. Hollywood realized the potential profit of expanding the audiences of blaxploitation films across those racial lines. The Los Angeles National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) head and ex-film publicist Junius Griffin coined the portmanteau from the words "black" and "exploitation." Variety credited Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song and the less radical, Hollywood-financed film Shaft (both released in 1971) with the invention of the blaxploitation genre. Have you ever heard an orchestral piece on the radio and wondered, "What was that? Who did it? Where can I get it?". This CD has many of those great pieces. Over the years, I have come to appreciate this music. This has led me to start collecting "lounge" music, Broadway cast albums, The pieces on this CD are very difficult to find. Every one is an enjoyable timepiece.

Eric’s collections of pop and orchestral instrumentals are where you really find the rarest material. The vocal collections contain rare songs, of course, but these songs can often be found on other collections and greatest hits anthologies. Instrumentals in general are harder to find and here they are remastered to Eric’s high standards which make every release something special.  As usual along with their excellent engineering they also provide detailed booklet notes.

Everything here has been nearly impossible to find on CD and if this is your interest I highly recommend the collection. The originals of most of the tracks you find on oldies specialty labels are owned by the huge media companies who don’t see a big enough market to interest them in putting them out. This leaves a niche market to be filled by various oldies labels. Like all of these, Eric licenses the material on their collections for a limited time and when the license runs out they stop making them and they start being offered only at very high prices by secondary sellers. The new 2016 "Elvis Presley The Album Collection" 60 CD Box Set is awesome, and features the same definitive Remastering by Vic Anesini that was used on 2011's "The Complete Elvis Presley Masters" box set which was over $700 and available only by mail.
That box set was flawless, and the huge book was amazing, but this set is less than half the price, and organized by album as the music was originally released, along with compilations and bonus tracks to make it complete. (Amazon)
