When Segovia first began playing guitar at the beginning of the 20th century, the instrument was regarded with some suspicion in Spanish music circles as belonging to the "lower classes" of society, at least compared to the Spanish lute, or vihuela. So Segovia had something to prove when he began playing the great classics of the Spanish Baroque vihuela composers on the guitar, and his conviction certainly comes across in this excellent recital. As many of his other recordings demonstrate, Segovia really responded to Baroque music's intricacy, style, and wit. If fact, much of this music was almost completely unknown until Segovia got his hands on it, and we can all be thankful that he did.

Every classical Guitarist today owes a debt of gratitiude to Andres Segovia. He was not only an amazingly unique talent but an innovator as well. When he rediscovered the guitar it was a forgotten instrument that shared little respect from the musical community. He literally invented the technique that all classical guitarists use today. In addition he sought out and compiled thousands of lost pieces for the instrument. He also made many transcriptions of pieces written for other instruments such as the piano and translated them brilliantly into the language of the guitar. Segovia's forte is Spanish music and his mastery of the Bach sonatas and partitas which were transcribed from the violin to the guitar. As a classical guitarist myself, hearing pieces like Grieg's piano works and Mendlesohns' string quartets played to perfection on his 1947 Herman Hauser II with such strength, clarity and authority makes me realize this man understood more about the music  than most "musicians" past and present could ever hope to understand in a lifetime. His guitar sings like a human voice and when he plays it truly sounds like a choral ensemble being played through one instrument. (Amazon)

In popular music, a cover version, remake, cover song, revival, or simply cover, is a new performance or recording by someone other than the original artist or composer of a previously recorded, commercially released song.  To take an electrified version of a song and create an acoustic version can sometimes result in amazingly beautiful renditions that part new light into a songs meaning or simply make it more accessible to the ear when it may have once been ignored. The cover may not take the same shape the original artist intended but you can't deny that it still has the soul of the original in a well crafted albeit new acoustic version. A song written in one genre can be entirely re-interpreted in another genre, which is often the case.

The songs in this compilation are prime examples of tracks that are powerful re-interpretations of already great tunes that also stand as great songs in their own right. These songs also  cover a multitude of genres, these songs all attest to the ability of music to unite people with distinct voices.

John's Children - A Strange Affair CD1+CD2 [2013]

 John's Children was the quintessential cult '60s mod/psych band, controversial, sharply dressed and subsequently the stuff of legend. The band was fronted by Andy Ellison (later with Jet and Radio Stars) and boasted Marc Bolan within their ranks during their short life. A Strange Affair for the first time boasts the entire Johns Children output between 1966 and 1970. The package includes two singles for EMI's Columbia label, four singles for The Who's label Track Records and their mock-live album Orgasm! Which was belatedly issued on US label White Whale in 1970. Also includes Andy Ellison's subsequent solo singles, three tracks by pre-Johns Children band The Silence, and a raft of rare and previously unissued alternative versions and mixes.

John's Children were a 60's Pop-Art-Mod-Psyche influenced group from Leatherhead, England. The group consisted of Andy Ellison on lead vocals, John Hewlett on bass guitar, Geoff McClelland on guitar, who was later replaced by Marc Bolan, and Chris Townson on drums. This excellent 2cd collection consists of all of the band's singles, as well as solo singles by Andy Ellison, alternate versions & mixes, instrumental tracks, as well as their infamous, much maligned "The Legendary Orgasm Album". Disc one consists of 26 tracks with a duration of nearly 70 minutes, while Disc 2 offers up a generous 75 minutes. So, there is much to discover and savor here for any fan of 60's Mod-Psyche tunes. Anthems in Eden: An Anthology of British & Irish Folk 1955-1978 is an excellent British and Irish box set...It is very pleasing. A very good collection of Britsh Folk and Folk Rock. All in all, this makes for a pretty coherent compilation.

There is a profusion of different anthologies out there, but this is one of the best... if only for having the bare-faced courage to include two genuine cult classics -- tracks from the deranged Comus and a lengthy epic from the equally bizarre Jan Dukes de Grey. Considering the beginning of this 4 disc set, rooted in unaccompanied "worthy" folk songs, it shows just what strange paths English folk music chose to wander, especially as the hippie era encouraged all sorts of excess in the name of self-expression. There are some wonderful classics here - check out "Mr Fox" for instance, but for me the weight of the collection is tilted towards the wonderful final disc. Jan Dukes de Grey, where have you been in my life?? I missed you the first time in my life, but listen to their jagged, bizarre epic -- totally noncommercial-- and you get the point of these anthologies, to sweep up bands/singers of note now lost to obscurity. VA - Roy Milton's Miltone Records Story 1946-1948 [2008] (2 x CD's)

Two discs 77 and 76 minutes each approximately. The sound is good to fair,with occasional surface noise. These sides, all recorded between 1946-1949 are from a man known to most as an R&B artist of some repute. Milton, himself, shows up on several tracks here, with his group the Solid Senders. This collection is a treasure trove of R&B with a few blues sides, from both well known artists and some lesser known. The more well known singer/musicians include,besides Milton, Maxwell Davis and his Orchestra,  Paul Gayten Trio and Roy Brown and his Orchestra. As is often the case, it's the lesser known artists here that are the greatest surprise. This collection has a number of artists like Effie Smith, Jesse Thomas,and Little Miss Cornshucks, who will be unknown except to real fans of this music. However, their tracks are every bit the equal of the well known people above. Together,these tracks make up some of the best big-city r&b of the era. Smooth but emotive vocals with, usually, horn/piano lead instrument (s) with the rest of the group playing the melodies. The booklet, as usual, from the folks at Acrobat Records is informative as far as they can take it. Many owner/artists have limited or non-existent biographies. An example is one of the partners in Miltone,Forrest Perkins. The booklet states that his early life is a mystery,since he couldn't be found in the census. Also he was to disappear mysteriously and possibly die in the Philippines in 1951-but no one knows for sure. The booklet also includes a number of biographies on several of the artists featured,including an overview of Roy Milton's life. An added bonus are the label reproductions of cartoon characters acting out the various song titles. A book of these would be wonderful.  All in all,this is one of the better small label compilations available. Hopefully there will be other collections of Milton's label in the future. For this is some great post-war R&B with just a pinch of blues mixed in for added color. It's evocative, swinging, moody music. The kind that can easily transport the listener back in time, when you might hear this music on a jukebox or live in some club, where the beer is a dime, on a late dark night in Los Angeles. "Taking Out Time" picks up after original lead vocalist and keyboardist Steve Windwood left the band to form Traffic and his brother Muff Winwood pursued a musical career behind the scenes. Disc One features their 1967 singles recorded with the Winwoods replacements Phil Sawyer and Eddie Hardin, including the pop sike classics 'Time Seller' and 'Mr Second Class'. Also their recordings used in the film soundtrack Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush. The second half of Disc One comprises their 1968 single and album recorded with Sawyer's replacement Ray Fenwick, who brought with him the excellent 'After Tea' (co-written with Dutch Tee Set pop master Hans Van Eijck). The album With Their New Face On is a mix of jazzy R&B and pop psychedelia. The standout R&B track is 'Don't Want You No More', which was later covered by The Allman Brothers. Disc Two boasts their rare, Germany-only single, and the US only LP Funky recorded in 1969 by Fenwick and Davis plus Nigel Olsson and Dee Murray (just before they joined Elton John). Also included is the theme to the TV show Magpie, originally recorded in 1968, and the groovy, heavy psych single 'Short Change'. RPM is pleased to finally be able to serve up previously unreleased BBC Sessions, recorded through 1968 around the promotion of With Their New Face On. These are coupled on Disc Three with live tracks and other rarities for which tapes have been archived, plus interesting alternative versions discovered down the years. This clamshell packaged box set is crammed full of fascinating details in booklet notes from Andy Neill, photos from various archives, and input from original members Ray Fenwick, Pete York and Spencer Davis.

Great remastered sound with many rarities. I've been waiting for years for an improvement on the sound of With Their New Face On- I can't tell you how much money I wasted on CD's with lousy sound for this album. The "Time Seller" single is brilliant, amazing sound and should have been #1 on the charts. I can't stop raving how great the audio is on this set. The singles, outakes, etc. sound great. This is really a phenomenal set of tunes by the post-Winwood Spencer Davis Group. This is really a fantastic set and the BBC Sessions are fantastic and the alternate versions are truly great.
