SUN RECORDS SINGLES

VA - The Complete Sun Singles, From The Vaults Vol. 1-3 [1994-1996] (12 x CDs)

The Complete Sun Singles is an extraordinary collection released by Bear Family Records, capturing the essence of Sun Records’ pioneering years. Across six volumes, each containing four CDs, this series meticulously compiles every single released by Sun Records, presenting them in their original mono format as intended by Sam Phillips.

Sun Records, founded in Memphis in 1952, was instrumental in shaping rock ‘n’ roll, rockabilly, blues, and country music. While legends like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins emerged from Sun’s roster, this collection focuses on the lesser-known but equally influential artists who helped define the label’s groundbreaking sound. From early blues recordings to the birth of rockabilly, these volumes offer a deep dive into the raw, unfiltered energy of Sun’s golden era.

Each volume is accompanied by a lavishly illustrated booklet, providing rare photos, label scans, and detailed song-by-song notes. The meticulous restoration ensures that every track retains its original warmth and grit, transporting listeners back to the vibrant days of Memphis’ legendary recording studio.

The Complete Sun Singles - From The Vaults Volume 1 [1994] is a deep dive into the early days of Sun Records, released by Bear Family Records. This 4-CD set captures the raw energy of the label’s pioneering years, featuring rare singles from blues, rockabilly, and early rock artists who helped shape modern music.

Sun Records, founded by Sam Phillips, was home to legends like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins, but this collection focuses on lesser-known artists who laid the groundwork for rock ‘n’ roll. Tracks from Rufus Thomas Jr., Little Junior’s Blue Flames, and The Prisonaires showcase the label’s rich blend of blues and rockabilly.

Presented in original mono, just as Phillips intended, this set preserves the authentic sound of the era. With detailed liner notes and rare photos, Volume 1 is an essential listen for collectors and fans of early rock history.

The Complete Sun Singles - From The Vaults Volume 2 [1995] continues the deep dive into the legendary Sun Records catalog. This 4-CD set captures the label’s transition from blues and country into the explosive rise of rockabilly and early rock ‘n’ roll.

Featuring iconic tracks like Johnny Cash’s "Folsom Prison Blues" and "I Walk the Line," Carl Perkins’ "Blue Suede Shoes," and Roy Orbison’s "Ooby Dooby," this volume highlights Sun’s growing influence on popular music. Alongside these legends, lesser-known gems from Billy "The Kid" Emerson, Sonny Burgess, and Warren Smith showcase the raw energy and innovation that defined the era.

Presented in original mono, preserving the authentic sound, this collection is a must-have for collectors and fans of early rock history. Volume 2 solidifies Sun Records’ legacy as the birthplace of rockabilly and a cornerstone of American music.

The Complete Sun Singles - From The Vaults Volume 3 [1996] continues the journey through the legendary Sun Records catalog. This 4-CD set captures the label’s golden era, showcasing the raw energy of rockabilly, blues, and early rock ‘n’ roll.

This volume highlights Sun’s transition into the late 1950s, featuring classics like Jerry Lee Lewis’ "Great Balls of Fire" and "Breathless," Johnny Cash’s "Ballad of a Teenage Queen," and Carl Perkins’ "Glad All Over." Alongside these legends, lesser-known gems from Sonny Burgess, Warren Smith, and Billy Riley showcase the label’s deep roster of talent.

Presented in original mono, preserving the authentic sound, this collection is a must-have for collectors and fans of early rock history. Volume 3 captures the spirit of Sun Records at its peak, ensuring these pioneering tracks remain accessible to new generations of listeners.

Beyond preserving Sun’s legacy, the collection also serves as an invaluable resource for music historians, collectors, and fans eager to explore rare and overlooked tracks. It ensures that the raw energy and innovation of Sun Records remain accessible to future generations, celebrating the label’s lasting impact.

This collection is a must-have for music historians and collectors, preserving the raw magic of Sun Records and ensuring that its legacy continues to inspire generations. (B)

    1. Thanks, Teddyboy Jim.
Some of those lesser-known Sun artists still sound as raw and electrifying as ever.
That excitement when Bear Family unveiled these sets was something special, wasn’t it? They truly set the gold standard for deep-dive collections, offering not just the music but the full story behind the label with incredible detail. Experience the evolution of Sun Records in its purest form, through meticulously restored tracks and insightful liner notes, was a game-changer.
