RARE & FORGOTTEN AUSTRALIAN ROCK
VA - Great Australian Rock, Rare & Forgotten (A Butterboy Compilation) (6 x CDs)
This collection shines a light on the overlooked and nearly lost pieces and hard-to-find gems of Australian music history; rare singles and forgotten tracks that helped define the nation's sound but have remained elusive over time. It embraces not only Australian artists but also the New Zealand musicians who settled in and recorded in Australia, contributing to the country’s rich musical landscape.
While iconic Australian rock is widely celebrated, many songs have faded into obscurity, slipping through the cracks of mainstream recognition despite their impact on the local scene, yet they represent the artistry, experimentation, and diversity that shaped Australian rock. Whether they were fleeting chart appearances, cult favorites, or hidden gems from albums long out of circulation, each track holds a unique place in the nation’s musical evolution.
Many of the tracks in this 6CD presentation are from the '80s and '90s but also reflects songs from the period late 1970s through the early 2000s. The Australian rock landscape was a melting pot of experimental sounds, blending classic rock, synth-pop, and alternative influences. The tracks in this collection, some long out of print or scarcely available outside dedicated collector circles; reflect the diversity and evolution of the scene. Artists like Vertical Hold, The Venetians, and Technicians contributed unique synth-driven pop-rock creations that thrived in their time but rarely resurface in modern playlists. Meanwhile, acts like Rattling Sabres, Cattletruck, and No Justice embraced the raw energy of Australian pub rock, crafting anthems that never reached global charts but still hold significance for dedicated fans.
Tracks from Scary Bill, Boystar, and Sirens feat. The Housemates highlight how the Australian rock world continuously evolved, sometimes blending club-friendly production with traditional rock arrangements. Each song carries the weight of an era, a story of an artist pushing their creativity while battling the fleeting nature of commercial success.
This set revives those moments, offering a nostalgic yet fresh perspective on the country’s musical past; ensuring they aren't forgotten but instead celebrated for their lasting impact. (B)
