PAUL YOUNG
Paul Young - Tomb Of Memories The CBS Years 1982-1994 [2015] (4 x CDs) + Bonus
Paul Young, born in Luton in 1956, carved a unique path through British pop and soul with a voice that blended vulnerability and grit. Before his solo breakthrough, he fronted pub-circuit bands like Kat Kool & the Kool Kats, Streetband (of “Toast” fame), and the brass-driven Q-Tips, each sharpening his stagecraft and soul leanings. In 1983, No Parlez launched him into the spotlight, with “Wherever I Lay My Hat” becoming a UK No. 1 and defining his blue-eyed soul sound. His follow-up, The Secret of Association, cemented his global appeal, especially with “Every Time You Go Away,” which topped the US charts. Young’s career is marked by emotional delivery, meticulous arrangements, and a knack for reinterpreting soul classics. He’s also known for his role in Band Aid and Live Aid, and later, his Tex-Mex side project Los Pacaminos. Through it all, Young remained a craftsman, more interpreter than showman, but always unmistakably himself.
Tomb of Memories, The CBS Years 1982-1994 released by Columbia and Sony Music, is a 4xCD deep dive into Paul Young’s tenure with CBS/Sony, spanning twelve years of pop-soul evolution, studio experimentation, and live grit. Curated with input from Young himself and compiled by Paul Sinclair of SuperDeluxeEdition, this 64-track anthology is a goldmine for collectors, packed with demos, alternate mixes, B-sides, and previously unreleased material.
CD1 opens with the original 7" version of “Iron Out the Rough Spots,” Young’s first CBS single, followed by a demo of “Tender Trap” from No Parlez, a track that never made it to CD until now. Also included is the elusive 1982 7" mix of “Love of the Common People,” which failed to chart but later became a signature hit. The disc closes with selections from the Japan-only Live Edition, including a raw take on “Broken Man.”
CD2 centers around The Secret of Association (1985), featuring the long-lost “Find One Voice,” a funky Anthony Moore composition shelved for decades. Rare B-side mixes like “This Means Anything” and alternate versions of “Tomb of Memories” and “Everything Must Change” add archival weight. The extended version of “Every Time You Go Away,” Young’s US No. 1, is a standout.
CD3 explores Between Two Fires and Other Voices, showcasing unreleased mixes of “Oh Girl,” “Softly Whispering I Love You,” and “Why Does a Man Have to Be Strong.” The haunting “Coralie,” another Moore-penned gem, was mixed from multi-track tapes specifically for this release.
CD4 rounds out the set with collaborations and late-era cuts, including “Don’t Dream It’s Over” (solo version), “Senza Una Donna” with Zucchero, and “Come On In” with Masayuki Suzuki.
A must-have for collectors, this set bridges studio polish with raw soul, offering a rare glimpse into Young’s creative vault, where alternate takes and buried gems finally get their moment to shine. This set is a definitive, rarity-rich chronicle of Young’s CBS legacy. (B)
As a BONUS I have included the following:
Paul Young - Remixes and Rarities (Special Edition) [2013] (2 x CDs)
Released by Cherry Pop in 2013, Remixes and Rarities is a two-disc celebration of Paul Young’s adventurous spirit across the 1980s and early ’90s. This special edition compiles extended versions, club mixes, live cuts, and previously hard-to-find B-sides, offering a fresh lens on Young’s soulful pop catalogue. Far from a mere nostalgia trip, the set reveals his adaptability, from the smooth melancholy of “Every Time You Go Away (Extended Version)” to the funk-infused grit of “Iron Out the Rough Spots (Extended Remix).”
CD1 leans into the dancefloor, with standout remixes like “Come Back and Stay (Scratch Mix)” and “I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down (Special Extended Mix)” showcasing Young’s crossover appeal.
CD2 deepens the experience with rarities such as “Love Will Tear Us Apart (Full Length Version)” and “I Was In Chains (Extended Mix),” both unique to this release. The inclusion of live tracks adds emotional immediacy, while the instrumental and dub versions highlight the production finesse behind his hits.
Compiled by John Reed and Paul Sinclair, the set is a collector’s gem, meticulously sourced and sequenced to honor Young’s legacy. It’s not just a remix album; it’s a portrait of an artist unafraid to experiment, evolve, and groove. (B)
Paul Young – Behind The Lens [2023]
Released in May 2023 on Crosscut Saw Records, Behind The Lens marks a reflective and intimate chapter in Paul Young’s storied career. Coinciding with his memoir Take A Piece Of Me With You, the album blends original compositions with carefully chosen covers, revealing a more contemplative, roots-inflected sound. Tracks like “Angel” and “My Only Harbour” showcase Young’s lyrical vulnerability, while his rendition of Will Oldham’s “I See A Darkness” adds emotional weight and interpretive depth.
The production is warm and organic, favoring acoustic textures and understated arrangements that highlight Young’s matured vocal timbre. Collaborations with longtime songwriting partners like Drew Barfield and Boo Hewerdine lend continuity to his artistic voice. Bonus tracks such as “Turning Into You” extend the album’s introspective arc.
Behind The Lens isn’t just a musical release, it’s a companion piece to a life revisited, offering fans a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the soul of a pop icon. (B)
