BB LUCKY DIP #500 + Bonus

BB LUCKY DIP #500

Lucky Dip's will be a mystery gift to those who choose to pick them up.

Be quick. No re-uploads.

Today's topic: Lucky Dip #500 + Bonus

A Milestone of Music, Memory & Discovery (5,000+ albums to date and still going...)

Reaching Lucky Dip #500 feels a little surreal. What began as a simple idea, to share music freely, joyfully, and without expectation, has grown into a long-running tradition built on curiosity, generosity, and the thrill of finding something unexpected. Each Lucky Dip has always carried the same promise, at least ten albums, sometimes themed, sometimes delightfully random, always chosen with the hope that something inside would spark joy for whoever picked it up.

Across these 500 dips, the aim has never changed. It’s been about opening doors, to the familiar, the forgotten, the overlooked, the rare, and the downright strange. About giving people, a chance to stumble across a new favourite, revisit an old memory, or discover an artist they might never have encountered otherwise. If even one album in each dip found a home with someone out there, then the mission was accomplished.

This milestone isn’t just a number, it’s a celebration of everyone who has come along for the ride. The commenters, the quiet downloaders, the long-time followers, the newcomers who wander in and suddenly find themselves exploring the archives. Your enthusiasm, curiosity, and kindness have kept this series alive and evolving.

And to mark the occasion properly, today’s Lucky Dip goes big, 100 albums in total, all drawn from the first 100 releases on the Vertigo label. A full sweep through the label’s early catalogue, a perfect way to honour the spirit of discovery that has carried this series to its 500th chapter. OH! A few other Bonus Vertigo albums...

So, here’s to 500 Lucky Dips. to the music shared, the surprises uncovered, and the community built along the way. And here’s to whatever comes next, more discoveries, more oddities, more gems waiting to be found.

Thanks for being part of it.

Cheers.

BB

    1. Hi lemonflag.

Yes, this is what cutting back looks like, I may need to rethink my definitions. Some collections just insist on being a little larger than planned.

  4. Thank you for this share. One silly question: You said 100 albums Or should we count 100 CDs? Albums nº 22, 25, 26 & 27 are missing, unless the bonus counts albums included in the 100. Album with number nº65 are 4. Finally, I thank you for all your dedication and generosity in providing us with such good albums. Best regards.

    1. Thanks for the thoughtful note, joaoabel .
The count refers to 100 discs, some entries naturally span multiple discs, which is why a few numbers appear as multi‑CD sets. A handful of long‑time followers may already have albums 22, 25, 26 and 27 from earlier Lucky Dips, so they weren’t repeated here. There are also some other numbering issues. In saying that I will update the main page links to fix and issues
Appreciate your kind words and the care you bring to checking the details.
      Cheers.

Love the image of you gearing up for the dig. This one is a bit of a mine, I’ll admit, a lot to unpack, a lot to shift, and a few seams worth chipping away at once you’re in there. Glad the scale gave you that jolt of surprise rather than dread. Enjoy the excavation.

  17. Dear BB, I had expected something extra special for Lucky Dip 500 - but not THIS big ! When love is all you need, and music is love, thanks for making so MUCH of it for all to enjoy ! I admire your wide and varied taste and interest in music genres, your attention to detail (even the nitpicky ones some of us visitors find) and all the time you spend on this website. Thanks for sharing your 'knowledge' [taxi-related pun, haha] on good music (the kind i love most) - and by dividing, it is multiplied around the world. Thank you.

I did want #500 to feel special, but it seems it had ideas of its own about how big it wanted to be. When the music is good and the threads run wide, it’s hard not to follow them.
Your kind words about the range, the detail, and the time that goes into the blog mean a lot, especially coming from someone who pays such close attention. And you’re right, when music is shared, it does multiply.

The Vertigo swirl really was something special, that hypnotic label spinning at 33rpm is a memory many of us still carry from the seventies. It’s part of what made the music feel even more alive.
I’m glad this collection brought some of that feeling back for you.

Thanks a lot for a great collection of Vertigo albums and congrats on your No. 500
I believe that Vertigo was the Progressive label from Philips records
EMI had Harvest as their Progressive label so was wondering if you had a similar collection of albums on Harvest ?

  33. Surreal indeed BB. If (and that's a big if) I recall correctly, I saw you at the start of this adventure, deciding to go for your own thing and look now... Up until now I go through your collection and find things (those Fab4 lost albums! and I've been looking everywhere!) that I think "how come I missed this?". I wish you and this community to celebrate a 600th, all in good health and good spirits. Also a nod of appreciation to our community here, for always keeping comments civilized and respectful, something I particularly value. Well done! Take care grtz.
