MOSAIC SELECT 19
VA - Mosaic Select, The Pacific Jazz Piano Trios [2005] (3 x CDs)
The Pacific Jazz label always had a particular glow about it—cool‑toned, spacious, and unmistakably West Coast, but The Pacific Jazz Piano Trios set reveals just how deep that aesthetic ran when filtered through the hands of its pianists. Mosaic’s curation pulls together sessions that were never meant to form a unified narrative, yet they sit together with the coherence of a quietly unfolding story: small‑group jazz shaped by clarity, restraint, and a devotion to interplay rather than flash.
What stands out first is the engineering. Pacific Jazz sessions from the mid‑50s to early ’60s were recorded with a kind of intimate transparency, piano crisp but never brittle, bass warm and centered, drums feather‑light yet articulate. Mosaic preserves that character beautifully. Collectors will appreciate the clean transfers from original analog sources, with no heavy‑handed EQ or compression. These discs breathe.
Musically, the set highlights the label’s breadth. You get the lyrical touch and harmonic poise of pianists who favored understatement over bravado, but each trio has its own fingerprint. Some lean toward chamber‑like cool jazz, others toward blues‑inflected swing, and a few hint at the modernist edges that would soon reshape the idiom. What ties them together is the Pacific Jazz sensibility: melodic clarity, rhythmic ease, and a sense of space that lets every gesture land.
The value lies not only in the music but in the documentation. Mosaic’s booklets remain a benchmark, sessionography, personnel details, recording dates, and label‑era context that help place each trio within the broader Pacific Jazz lineage. Many of these sessions were scattered across LPs, EPs, and regional issues; having them consolidated with authoritative notes gives the material a new sense of permanence.
The set feels like a window into a quieter corner of West Coast jazz—refined, warm, and deeply musical. It rewards close listening and invites repeat visits, each time revealing another small detail in the trio interplay. (B)

thanks for the Select issue. These are kind of hard to come by. I have the by Toshiko Akiyoshi big band but with the individual CDs. Some of the other ones are available for streaming but not called Mosaic Selects. This one is a good one and I did have a copy of it on a hard drive that I dropped and lost. It is different and some some nice trio stuff on it. So again and I really appreciate all of the music that you share!
ReplyDeleteAnd Clare Fischer is an underrrated talent and is excellent!
ReplyDeleteOne more the album Jimmy Rowles made with Stan Getz is superb. I have the vinyl! I can send you a digitized copy if you like!
ReplyDeleteHi Joe,
DeleteReally appreciate all your notes.
I’m glad this one fills a gap, especially after losing your old copy. The trio material here really does show another side of the Pacific Jazz sound, and you’re right about Clare Fischer: such a subtle, underrated artist. And that Rowles/Getz album is a beauty, lovely to hear you’ve got the vinyl.
Cheers.
Nice listening here, thanks Butterboy.
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure, Bob Mac.
