MUSICAL POLITICS

VA - Songs for Political Action: Folk Music, Topical Songs and the American Left [1996] (10 x CD's)

Spanning the years 1926 to 1953,'Songs for Political Action: Folk Music, Topical Songs and the American Left' features nearly 300 extremely rare recordings on ten CD's. There's folk material, of course, but also cowboy songs, country songs, blues and country-blues. These ten CDs also tear down the stereotype of the dry and doctrinaire political song.

This set is incredible. It is full of things from Pete Seeger's personal archives. Old recordings and photos not found anywhere else. The set is chock full of great recordings by lesser know artists like Vern Partlow and Tom Glazer as well as obscure releases from the Almanac Singers, Bernie Asbel, Josh White and others. There will be some duplication if you own sets like " Little Red Box of Protest Songs " from Proper and recordings from Pete Seeger and the Almanac Singers.  A must for any fan of political music, folk music and absolutely essential for any fan of Pete Seeger. VA - Flying Nun 25th Anniversary Box Set [2016] (4 x CD's)

FLYING NUN

VA - Flying Nun 25th Anniversary Box Set [2016] (4 x CD's)

Flying Nun Records is an independent record label formed in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1981 by music store manager Roger Shepherd. The label formed in the wake of a flurry of new post-punk-inspired labels appearing in New Zealand in the early 1980's, in particular Propeller Records in Auckland. Shepherd had intended to record the original local music of Christchurch, but soon the label rose to national prominence by championing the emerging music of Dunedin. "Ambivalence" by The Pin Group (the first band of Roy Montgomery) was the first release from Flying Nun, although it is widely assumed[by whom?] that "Tally Ho" by The Clean was the first release, as it unexpectedly reached number nineteen in the New Zealand charts, bringing the label unanticipated profile and income. There followed the seminal Dunedin Double, a release which cemented the place of the southern city in the forefront of New Zealand independent music. Flying Nun moved into the full-length album market in 1982 with the Ego Gratification Album by Chris Knox and Beatin Hearts by Builders (recorded 1982, Auckland). Many of New Zealand's most prominent kiwi rock and alternative bands have signed to Flying Nun at some stage in their careers. In 2000 Australian youth radio network Triple J produced a list of the thirty "Greatest New Zealand acts of all time", twenty of them by Flying Nun artists. The label has been home to various styles of music, including the much-debated Dunedin sound, "high-end pop with a twist", lo-fi experimentation, strongly Velvet Underground-influenced pop, minimalism, industrial, and rock-electronic crossover. (Wikipedia)

Limited to 1500 copies worldwide this 4 x CD boxset celebrates the 25th Anniversary of New Zealand's finest (and longest running) independent label. Jam packed with long out-of-print rarities this set will have fans of the iconic label salivating. The four discs are sequenced in a roughly chronological order with the tracks hand-picked by Shepherd himself. The first disc covers the label's early years, with flagship band The Clean aptly getting things started with the epic 'Point That Thing Somewhere Else'. Other obvious names like The Chills, The Verlaines and The Gordons are present but this multi-disc format affords them the luxury of including some obscurities and lost gems from the likes of The Rip and Victor Dimisch Band, not to mention the label's first release - 'Ambivalence' by Pin Group. The second disc covers the mid-to-late 80's, the years many consider the label's heyday, where second generation Nun bands like The Bats and Straitjacket Fits took the label to the world. Again more rare treats are to be had with Stephen, The Weeds, Alpaca Brothers and This Kind Of Punishment. Disc three continues from the late 80s to mid 90s where the music really hit it's stride with great bands like Skeptics, JPSE, 3Ds and the mighty Bailter Space and the final disc takes us from the mid 90s to the present day where we witness some of the label's key original players going solo (David Kilgour, Martin Phillips, Graeme Downes) and a new generation of fresh and exciting talent like HDU, The Subliminals and The Mint Chicks. Fittingly ending with the pre-Nun band many consider to be one of the label's catalysts (Flying Nun,2006.)

VA - Memphis Belles (The Women Of Sun Records) [2002] (6 x CD's)

MEMPHIS BELLES

VA - Memphis Belles (The Women Of Sun Records) [2002] (6 x CD's)

"Memphis Belles, The Women of Sun Records" offers an unprecedented look at the women who recorded for Sun Records more than half a  century ago. The box set presents nearly 40 different singers and over 150 tracks, by far the most detailed look at these forgotten women and their music. Sometimes their lives were as poignant as their songs. Some ended tragically. Others found a degree of fame and fortune, if only fleeting, before retiring into obscurity. Sun historian Hank Davis tells the stories of these largely unknown singers from rock 'n' roll's early days, and accompanies them with a wealth of photographs, many previously unpublished.

Until now, the women of Sun Records have remained a largely overlooked part of the Sun saga. This collection of their music and life stories offers the first real glimpse at an unappreciated side of the legacy of Sun Records.  All the songs on here are very rare and hard to find. I love how each CD is categorized by genre (Rock 'N' Roll, Country, Blues, Pop) The book it comes with tells you about each artists and where they came from. I would recommend this to anyone who loves good old fashioned music. You will love it guaranteed! (Amazon)

BAGPIPES ROCK

VA - Bagpipes For Monty (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2

The bagpipe is a musical instrument using enclosed reeds fed from a constant reservoir of air in the form of a bag. Though the Scottish Great Highland Bagpipe and Irish uilleann pipes have the greatest international visibility, bagpipes have been for centuries played throughout large parts of Europe, the Caucasus, around the Persian Gulf and in Northern Africa. In recent years, often driven by revivals of native folk music and dance, many types of bagpipes have enjoyed a resurgence in popularity and, in many cases, instruments that were on the brink of obscurity have become extremely popular. This list details the use of bagpipes in a variety of works, from classical to jazz and rock. (Wikipedia)

What you will find here are tracks that represent Bagpipes used in rock music. Songs that feature 100 percent real bagpipes. Tracks with instruments that sound like bagpipes (Steve Earle's - Coperhead Road and Big Country’s - In a Big Country etc.) were not Included in this compilation. Traditional Highland Bagpipes tunes we also not included.

I hope you will enjoy the bleat.

MUSIC MOVIE DOCUMENTARY #12 7 AGES OF ROCK [2007] (7 x Videos) MP4

MUSIC MOVIE DOCUMENTARY #12

7 AGES OF ROCK [2007] (7 x Videos) MP4

Seven Ages of Rock (also known as 7 Ages of Rock) is a BBC Two series, co-produced by BBC Worldwide and VH1 Classic in 2007 about the history of rock music.

Seven Ages of Rock's comprised six 60-minute episodes, with a final episode of 90 minutes, and was broadcast on Saturdays at 21:00 (repeated on BBC One on Sundays). Each episode focused on one type of rock music, each typified by one or two artists or bands. The series producer was William Naylor, and the executive producer for the BBC was Michael Poole, a former editor of the 1990's BBC music, arts and culture programme The Late Show. The production was based at BBC Bristol and each programme was narrated by Julian Rhind-Tutt on the BBC and Dennis Hopper on VH1 classic. The series also included additional material broadcast on BBC radio and available on the BBC website.

Part 1    The Birth Of Rock (Blues-based Rock 1963-1970)

The rock revolution of the 1960's seen through the life and music of Jimi Hendrix.  The first doomed icon of rock,  Hendrix was the synthesis of everything that had gone before him and all that was to come.  The Birth Of Rock also explores the influence of rhythm & blues on a generation of British musicians such as The Rolling Stones, Cream and The Who, and how the song-writing of Bob Dylan and studio developments of The Beatles Transformed the possibilities and ambitions of rock.

Part 2    White Light, White Heat (Art Rock 1966-1980)

The story of how artistic and conceptual expression permeated rock.  From the pop-art multi-media experiments of Andy Warhol and the Velvet Underground to the sinister gentility of Peter Gabriel's Genesis, White Light, White Heat traces how rock became a vehicle for artistic ideas and theatrical performance.  We follow Pink Floyd from the fated art school genius of Syd Barrett through the global success of Dark Side of the Moon to the ultimate rock theater show, The Wall, Along the way, the film explores the retro-futurism's of Roxy Music and the protean world of David Bowie.

Part 3    Blank Generation (Punk 1973-1980)

A tale of two cities, London and New York and the bird of punk.  Each city created a bastard child that marked the biggest and fundamental shift in popular music since Elvis walked into Sun Studios.  Blank Generation unpicks the relationship between the bankrupt New York and the class and race-riven London of the mid-1970's and explores the music of The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Ramones, Television, Patti Smith, The Damned and Buzzcocks.

Part 4    Never Say Die (Heavy Metal 1970-1991)

The story of the longest surviving and certainly the loudest genre of rock, heavy metal.  With no sign of disappearing, metal has been the most controversial and misunderstood of all rock genres.  Emerging at the tail end of the hippy dream from the rust belt of industrial England, heavy metal would go on to secure the most loyal fan base of all.  With Black Sabbath as the undisputed Godfathers, we follow their highs and lows, and, along the journey, meet Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Metallica.

Part 5    We Are The Champions (Stadium Rock 1965-1993)

We Are The Champions follows the development of some of the biggest names in Rock, among them Queen, Bruce Springsteen, The Police and Dire Straits and shows how, through events such as Live Aid and the rise of MTV, rock achieved a global influence on culture and politics.  The film concludes in the early 90's, as U2 effectively brought the era to a close by reinventing the big rock show so completely, that fifteen years later most major rock tours are still pale facsimiles.

Part 6    Left Of The Dial (Alternative Rock 1980-1994)

The rise of alternative rock in the USA.  From it's early underground days where bands like Black Flag drew inspiration from the DIY ethos of punk, Left Of The Dial traces the history of the network of fans, clubs and fanzines that sustained the scene and launched the careers of bands like REM, The Pixies and Husker Du.  The film takes a fresh look at the explosion of the Seattle scene, culminating in the success of Nirvana's 'Nevermind' and the tragic loss of Kurt Cobain, an artist who's triumph and tragedy continues to cast an inescapable shadow.

Part 7    What The World Is Waiting For (Indie 1980-2007)

The story of British Indie, beginning with The Smiths, the archetypal indie group.  The film follows The Stone Roses as the heirs to the indie crown, Suede's dark sexuality and the media saturation of Brit-pop's Blur v Oasis.  What The World Is Waiting For explores how indie ultimately lost it's once cherished intimacy and integrity in front of 250,000 fans at Oasis's Knebworth spectacle in 1996 and how, by returning to it's roots in clubs and bars (and even front rooms) with bands such as Franz Ferdinand, The Libertines and The Arctic Monkeys, indie became respectable again.
