CLIFF RICHARD
Cliff Richard - The Singles Collection (1958-1964) [2002] (6 x CD's)
Sir Cliff's 40 Year History is Covered in this Six Disc Set featuring all 127 of his Solo Singles. Packaged in a Clamshell Box, the Six CDs in Individual Pouchettes, also Includes a Deluxe 16 Page Booklet with Extensive Liner Notes.
Superbly packaged with useful record data, "Cliff Richard: The Singles Collection" is worth the attention of anyone who wants to understand the history of the British rock music scene before, during, and after the Beatles Era. The chronological arrangement allows the listener to follow Cliff Richard and the Shadows from their late-1950s and early-1960s heyday (how did "Please Don't Tease" or "The Young Ones" fail to chart in the U.S.?) through their relative eclipse in the mid-1960s (a rave-up version of the Rolling Stones' "Blue Turns to Grey" represents their effort to adapt to the new sound) to his 1970s-80s transatlantic success (the U.S. Top Ten hits "Devil Woman," "We Don't Talk Anymore," and "Dreamin'" are included)--and finally to the singer's authentic and tasteful embrace of his own spirituality ("Saviour's Day" is a particularly successful example). One has to wonder how the history of the British Invasion of 1964 would have played out contextually in the States if Cliff Richard and the Shadows had been truly part of the American pop-music landscape. This excellent set is not just for Cliff Richard fans but also for any serious student of British pop. (Amazon)

Thanks for this set, Butter - worth it even if just for the small handful I know, and haven't heard in too long.
ReplyDeleteYou are always welcome sir.
DeleteCliff Richard is an underrated artist . He has been prolific and worthy for many years. I like a lot of his songs both early and later.
Cheers
Many thanks

TKS KING FROM AUSSIE
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the Cliff. Very underrated at times.
DeleteCheers
Hi Butterboy,
ReplyDeleteMaybe I've listen a dozen of Cliff Richard's songs at the most in my whole life. Here I have 6 CDs so I have a lot of work in front of me. Thanks.
Cheers
Hi Il Commendatore
DeleteCliff is not everyone's cup of tea, but I feel he is underrated. Enjoy his unique voice.
Cheers
We didn't get enough of him in the U.S. - making up for it now - also revisiting The Shadows
DeleteHi Tashi,
DeleteCliff is a talented individual. He has many eras of music style but his voice is always there. very underappreciated artist. It would be well worth exploring more of the shadows output, as you plan to do.
Cheers.
Thanks for sharing. It's a shame 'Throw Down a Line' wasn't included, though.
ReplyDeleteHi Paolo,
DeleteMaybe not included because it was a single by "Cliff And Hank". Thanks for bring that up though . It is a great single/song.
Cheers
