POP PSYCH SOUNDS
VA - Pop Psych Sounds from The Apple Era [2003-2013] (5 x CD's)
VA - 94 Baker Street (The Pop-Psych Sounds of the Apple Era 1967-1969) [2003]
Beatles collectors, jump on this one if you have not already. This CD fills in some Apple-related gaps nicely. Apple Publishing was kept busy in the late 60’s with several tracks by Grapefruit, Focal Point, Ways and Means, Misunderstood, Paintbox and John Fitch and Associates. Some of these saw the light of day and others not but there is not a bad track here. This compilation by RPM highlights the exciting pop & psych sounds that originated at 94 Baker St., where The Beatles launched their Apple organization. Includes many very rare, previously unreleased, & exclusive tracks. RPM. If you love Syd Barrett you must own a copy of "Sycamore Sid" (actual track one) by Focal Point. It is the best Syd Barrett-style lyric I've ever heard, other than Syd's own. Truly, one of the greatest and most hilarious unheard sixties gems. If the disc contained only this song, it would be worth your few quid. You must also experience the mind-blowing psych of "Lullaby" by Grapefruit, also one of the greatest sixties obscurities, fusing elements of Hollies, Beatles and Beach Boys. Utterly lovely. Certainly, the Iveys (who grew up to be Badfinger)demos are fantastic, propelled by the energy of the Who (especially the dead-on Who impression "Tube Train") and the harmonies of the Hollies and Beatles. Tremendous stuff. (Amazon)
VA - An Apple A Day (More Pop-Psych Sounds From The Apple Era 1967-1969) [2006]
With the assistance of, the author of the History of the Beatles Apple Organization book, we have constructed a second volume. The Apple Music publishing company was first into battle for the new organization, making it's initial signings in mid 1967, in fact before the company even got to 94 Baker St. Over the next two years they demoed many writers and placed recordings where possible. Inevitably given the amount recorded much remained unissued and we are happy to be able to give many of those songs a well deserved airing. Highlights includes four more previously unissued Iveys tracks, the first recordings of Gallagher & Lyle, and the cult Bachdenkel who provide the title track. The sleeve notes are a lovingly documented essay by Stefan Granados including many rare pictures and memorabilia. (Amazon)
VA - Treacle Toffee World Further Adventures into the Pop-Psych Sounds from the Apple Era 1 [2008]
Comprises of 18 new and very rare tracks, completes the exploration of the catalogue of the Beatles' Apple Music Publishing company that began with RPM's release of '94 Baker Street' in 2003. George Alexander of Grapefruit, Pete Ham, Tom Evans and Ron Griffiths of The Iveys & Badfinger, Dave Lambert [Fire, Strawbs] and Gallagher & Lyle were but a few of the impressive stable of song writers under contract to Apple Music, and these are all represented here. (Amazon)
VA - Lovers From The Sky (Pop Psych Sounds from The Apple Era 1968-1971) [2010]
The fourth installment in the series explores the archive of songs and songwriters once signed to Apple Music. Favorites are present again in songs from the pens of George Alexander and Gallagher & Lyle. The majority however are new to the series including some terrific previously unreleased full recording demos from Promise and Contact. Known names crop up too with Timon, Brute Force, the Foremost and Stefan Grossman. Also the Focal Point make a welcome return after appearing on Volume One of this series. (Amazon)
VA - 94 Baker Street Revisited (Poptastic Sounds from The Apple Era 1967-1968) [2013]
The fifth volume in RPM's successful series unearthing the delights of the Apple Music song catalog. Sure to find favor with collectors of the previous volumes, added to which we have 17 previously unreleased tracks, and all but one of the artists are new to the series. Volume 5 has a strong flavor of the prevailing pop sound with acts coming out of the Beat era such as the Liverpool artists Buddy Britten, and the Perishers. Barry Alexander went on to form the harmony pop band Design. Rights of Man became Grapefruit. As before, the package comes with a detailed booklet containing fascinating artist stories pulled together by Apple Music expert Stefan Granados. (Amazon)

ReplyDeleteA lot of thanks, Butterboy
ReplyDeleteGreat stuff.
ReplyDeleteDo you realise that George Alexander (from "Grapefruit") is a stage name.
his real name is Alexander Young,
The older brother of George Young (From 'The Easybeats","Flash and the Pan" and part of the Harry Vanda and George Young songwriting team).
and therefore, also the brother of Malcolm and Angus Young from the group ACDC
Thanks Unknown.
DeleteAlways great to get more insight into the music we listen to.
Cheers.
