VA - Songs For An Aging Child (A Butterboy Compilation) (4 x CD's)

“You are young, and life is long and there is time to kill today / And then one day you find ten, twenty, thirty years have got behind you. (Pink Floyd, "Time")

Getting older is a fact, a dream, a curse and a part of nature. Where did the time go....

We experience many phases through our life’s journey. As a newborn we absorb the sounds around us preparing us for what lies ahead, As a child finding a way to express ourselves and learn enough to enjoy the life ahead, as a teenager questioning and realizing the here and now, experiencing youthful exuberance of life and its wonders, getting through middle age where we often wonder how we got there in one piece and what legacy we will leave our family. As we age further, we reflect on and sometimes become anxious about whether we are burdensome to those around us, and some become anxious just about getting older. When we start to realize that our life will one day expire it is then that we reflect on a beautiful life we experienced.

Our memories are incredibly important to us as we age. Listening to music helps to reflect on the memories of our lives whatever the genre or artist. Aging itself is less important when love is in one’s life and when we keep an open mind to carry us through.  Songwriters have long been able to reflect on these matters of the aging process. There are many fantastic songs that explore these feelings and that are expressed better than most of us can articulate. Rather than be saddened by our age (something we have no control over) lets renew our understanding of life and rejoice and honour the process of getting older (It's not so bad).

Here are 100 songs about aging. As usual many genres and years. Listening to these songs is very rewarding as we hear about the social change of aging over the years by youngsters, middle agers and elderly artists.

  3. The Jagger Mars Bar um, rumour floored me with laughter ... the album post that was 'Between The Buttons' and of course in '71 'Sticky Fingers'. The original cover, by Warhol, features treacle which in turn looks a lot like chocolate!

    Coincidence perhaps!

    LOL :-)

My mind says I am 30, my drivers license says 70 and my body says 110.

The one comment I found to be so true now I am older is "The days are long and the years are short".

  5. Sorry BB... ya gotta make this 101 songs. Because it currently does not include Peggy Lee's "Is That All There Is?"
...one of the most depressing songs (next to Porter Wagner's "Rubber Room") ever recorded.

  7. This is a really thoughtful comp, BB. Unexpected and unusual category but one with powerful relevance. I have been around here long enough to pick up on your probable inspiration for this one. You included almost all the tunes that came to mind without researching, and many many more, but that is why you're incomparably brilliant at assembling these. In looking thru the track list I thought you were gonna leave off the two Apple Records contributions from Mary Hopkin and The Beatles but then I got to CD4 and there they are. Funny aside.. back in the 60s and listening to radio through a handy little transistor unit.. those were great but AM audio lacked clarity so thought The Beatles were singing "When I'm SIX-FOOT FOUR" and thinking that's an odd thing to sing about.. those silly Beatles.. they are so full of made-up references and hidden or double meanings. I guess all that is true but song sure made a lot more sense when learned much later what the words really were about.

    1. Hi mrRadio,
It is always a wonderful and enjoyable surprise to see your comments. Your processes of evaluation always bring a smile to my face. I never really like the Beatles song "When I'm Sixty-Four" as I was growing up. It didn't deliver the atmosphere I needed at the time. That aside you are spot on with Beatles tracks being interpreted differently by many despite the sound quality issue of getting deafer as you get older or the sound that omitted from some transistor radios.(now I have passed 64 and am still almost six foot four i do enjoy them) The tracks in this compilation try to cover a lot of ground but whatever track appeals here, if only its a few, and connects with your feelings, then that is good. If anyone takes time to listen to all of these tracks there is much to be rewarded by. Getting old is not just about oneself, its about those around you too.
Hope to hear more from you around this space.

      Cheers

  8. Thank you, Butter, for this fine and thoughtful collection, some of it realistically so(m)ber... and some nicely and healthfully light-hearted. I'm young and will be Forever Young; my body's just aging prematurely. So the calendar and calculator say I'm growing older; but I know better, and I'm determined never to grow old. Salud!

    1. Hi Aging Child,
This set was an interesting one for me. I like that aging seems to be a real dilemma for most people. To me that is not the case. I would be more annoyed about no living happily, whatever the age. I too have a a mind that has more to learn, I hope my body holds out. Irrespective of age be happy and try to enjoy the magic of life.

      Cheers.
