BASSOON & OBOE
VA - Bassoon & Oboe in Rock (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3
The bassoon is a woodwind instrument in the double reed family, which has a tenor and bass sound. It is composed of six pieces, and is usually made of wood or synthetic plastic. It is known for its distinctive tone color, wide range, versatility, and virtuosity. It is a non-transposing instrument and typically its music is written in the bass and tenor clefs, and sometimes in the treble. There are two forms of modern bassoon: the Buffet (or French) and Heckel (or German) systems. It is typically played while sitting using a seat strap, but can be played while standing if the player has a harness to hold the instrument. Sound is produced by rolling both lips over the reed and blowing direct air pressure to cause the reed to vibrate. Its fingering system can be quite complex when compared to those of other instruments. Appearing in its modern form in the 19th century, the bassoon figures prominently in orchestral, concert band, and chamber music literature, and is occasionally heard in pop, rock, and jazz settings as well.
The oboe is a type of double reed woodwind instrument. Oboes are usually made of wood, but may also be made of synthetic materials, such as plastic, resin or hybrid composites. The most common oboe plays in the treble or soprano range. A soprano oboe measures roughly 65 cm (25+1⁄2 in) long, with metal keys, a conical bore and a flared bell. Sound is produced by blowing into the reed at a sufficient air pressure, causing it to vibrate with the air column. The distinctive tone is versatile and has been described as "bright". When the word oboe is used alone, it is generally taken to mean the treble instrument rather than other instruments of the family, such as the bass oboe, the cor anglais (English horn), or oboe d'amore. The oboe is widely recognized as the instrument that tunes the orchestra with its distinctive 'A'
Today, the Bassoon & oboe is commonly used as orchestral or solo instrument in symphony orchestras, concert bands and chamber ensembles. The oboe is especially used in classical music, film music, some genres of folk music, and is occasionally heard in jazz, rock, pop, and popular music.
Here are 63 tracks in rock that utilize the Oboe or Bassoon... Enjoy!

Another great Butterboy compilation 👍, Jay
ReplyDeleteThanks freebie606969
DeleteAppreciated, Jay.
Cheers.
Amazing. I'm used to seeing your incredible compilations, but this one is beyond imagination. As a bassoonist, I never thought that I would see even one volume of bassoon and oboe rock and you come up with three. How did you find these esoteric treasures? However, you missed Sandie Shaw's Puppet on a String. So here is the you tube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEoCAUZSfwA
ReplyDeleteHi Eric,
DeleteI am so delighted that you are delighted. Enjoy the music. I am sure there are many songs I have missed . This is my first crack at it.
Cheers.
Thank you for this collection.
ReplyDeleteHi Doubi.
DeleteWho would have thought Bassoon & Oboe in Rock...
Cheers.
What a wonderful and original post, always loved baroque pop, tangents and detours like "Ladytron" and "Bye Bye Pride" are a pure delight.
ReplyDeleteNow for compilations featuring Harpsichord and Vocoder.......?
Hi Nimrod,
DeleteThanks for that.
Its great to hear something new when listing to old music.
Cheers.
Who would have thought that Boudewijn de Groot would show up on a compilation like this. His 'Eva' is an awesome song,in an incredibly beautiful arrangement by Bert Paige (real name Albert Lapage). One of my friends named his daughter Eva because of this song.
ReplyDeleteHi Peerke,
DeleteEva is a great tune. Great story too.
Cheers.
These instrument-focussed comps are wonderful. Can I request a future one? The Vibraslap! It's got a great name for a percussion instrument, and has been featured in Jimi Hendrix's "All Along The Watchtower" and Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion" and many others...
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Hi Mark L.
DeleteIt sometimes opens out ears more. Vibraslap?? Need to look at that one.
Cheers.
Wonderful collection. If I may add, the oboe was also used to great effect on Roxy Music's Out of the Blue and King Crimson's Lizard.
ReplyDeleteThanks Earthbound.
DeleteI could only fit so many tracks on this set. Maybe on the next one...
Cheers
Thanks BB,
ReplyDeleteWhat an incredible compilation of your own. Usually your comps are great and this one is not an exception. I'm enjoying it. Your head is full of great and original ideas.
Cheera
Hi Il Commendatore,
DeleteMusic is an exploration as much as it is beautiful to listen to. Ideas are easy.. coming up with the goods is a little harder.
I hope you enjoy these.
Cheers.
You put together what others fear to do. Rock on BB.
ReplyDeleteHi D,
DeleteI fear to put together what others fear to do...
I all about the love of music... now onto French Horns in Rock.
Cheers.
Here is something a little more obscure, although it was on the soundtrack for the Brazilian movie "City of God". Cartola- Preciso Me Encontrar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUjOfsoBhMY
ReplyDeleteThanks Eric.
DeleteNice sound.
I tried to keep it this comp in the rock pop category. But the track you sent me would still fits well.
Thanks again.
Cheers.
I thought about that and felt that it expanded, but did not conflict with the general thesis of the collection.
DeleteHi Mr. Butterboy! I do radio shows (terrestrial even!)on WMBR (MIT radio) featuring one particular instrument in songs from the '60s and '70s. I already have about 80 songs with bassoons that I have found (most on albums I'm gonna have to comb through the find the one I need) and then I found your list. Is there any way that you can let me know which ones of these are bassoons instead of oboes? Thank you! You can do it privately. bob.dubrow@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteHi Unknown.
DeleteI wish I could help. I collected these tracks over the years and plugged them into a folder called "Oboes and Bassoons in Rock". When I listen to these I would suggest most are Oboe related although there are a few with Bassoons. I don't have the source links for these bunch of songs. I did have an excel chart somewhere but cannot locate it at present. I will keep looking and let you know if I find it. Does you list include any of the artists in this compilation?
Cheers
As another fan of Baroque and woodwinds - and Rock - I give this compilation Two Reeds Up; thanks, Butter! I really like the lovely area where the two genres/worlds intersect, and am still surprised to see how many recordings I already know have been included... e.g., "Oh, that's right - that _is_ a bassoon / an oboe on that one; how did it not occur to me?" That whets my appetite further to give listen to the recordings here I *don't* know... yet...
ReplyDeleteHi Aging Child,
DeleteI was going to do a compilation on Obese Baboons but this one sounded better.
Most are Oboe related sounds with a few Bassoons thrown in for good measure.
Enjoy these.
Cheers.
Obese baboons would have made a more startling tray liner... but thank you, nonetheless, for not monkeying with an excellent idea. ;-)
ReplyDeleteLinks are dead.
ReplyDeleteHi Peacock,
DeleteNew links established, tested and working.
Cheers.
I must say: very impressed, remind me the golden age of blog where there are people listening and transmitting passion. I am coming from a french blog which gives us your blog with high reputation. How did you made this selection... You have radar instead of normal ears, by the way no artificial intelligence would reach this marvelous result. Thanks a lot (signed A French Guy)
ReplyDeleteHi DevantF.
DeleteWelcome.
I am really happy that you like this set. I have made many compilations around a particular instrument. I have collected music for many years and have collected these tracks over the years and plugged them into a folder called "Oboes and Bassoons in Rock". After collating enough tunes, I would do the research which takes longer than collecting the music. Check album covers for detail, look online and check music resources like Disocogs and Musicbrains. There are many. Please look around my blog, there may be more music you like.
Cheers.
