VA - Thank God It's Friday [1978] (2 X CD's)

Sure, Thank God It's Friday is widely acknowledged to be a turkey.  But this soundtrack isn't as atrocious as you might expect, especially if you enjoy disco's Euro strain. Unlike Can't Stop the Music and its exclusive Village People focus, there are many artists represented here, ensuring a fair amount of nuggets. The tracks produced by Giorgio Moroder and his acolyte Pete Bellotte are particularly lush in a robotic kind of way. Donna Summer's contributions include the classic "Last Dance" and a pretty fabulous version of Serge Gainsbourg's "Je t'Aime Moi Non Plus" a good 20 years before it was hip to cover him.

I wore my original record album out years ago. I'm glad that I decided to purchase the CD. It brings back memories and gives me a chance to "work out" by practicing the dance routines I used to dance. It isn't like going to the gym, but for me it's better! Great CD. Takes you back to the disco era and this is where the soundtrack was better than the film, absolutely worth a listen.  (Amazon)

  2. I'm semi-obsessed - not with the movie, but with the sleeve art for the original album/movie poster.....it looks like either Will Elder or Al Jaffee's work, both of whom were notable alumni of MAD. Can anyone with the original album verify who did do the illustration (if indeed it's even credited on the back cover?)

  3. I may have this LP down in my storage room. Several years ago, I used to travel to auctions, flea markets, thrift shops, yard sales, & pawnshops hoping to find those elusive (album) gems. Then, life changes and abruptly gave up, yada yada, and I have yet to this day checked out every album, cassette, 45, 8-tracks, etc that I've purchased LOL (I've brought back many boxes of LPs, sometimes a couple of bucks a box but mind you, a lot of filler, local country & western, torn covers, you get the picture). But I do think this LP was in one of the batches, along with the Barry Manilows, the Streisands, and every other album you run into at a thrift store. Anyway, I may have to scoop this up BB. I don't feel like spending days rummaging through the store room lol.

    Awesome blog BB!
