STEPHENS QUOTE OF THE DAY

"You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way."

  1. Just so many with these ....Johnny is back!

Some of these probably deserve more.

"I always had long legs. When I was young, I used to think, 'Why do I look like a little pony?'"
    Tina Turner

"My attitude toward men who mess around is simple: If you find 'em, kill 'em."
    Loretta Lynn

"You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way."
    Johnny Cash

"I have tried sex with both men and women. I found I liked it."
    Dusty Springfield

"You would think that a rock star being married to a supermodel would be one of the greatest things in the world. It is."
    David Bowie

    Wonderful stuff.

    Cheers

  2. BB, my apologies for inserting this (fairly generic) rave review here, and double-apologies for including a request besides.

First: you are KILLING me with these incredible sets. Between the Grapefruit/Cherry Red Britrock extravaganzas, the priceless music documentary videos, and the historic and invaluable Billie Holiday & Ella Fitzgerald sets, I've had to buy not one but TWO external hard drives just to accommodate the must-have items you've chosen to share with us. So when I say "requests", let me state for the record I would never nudge you into posting more music, as your taste is impeccable, and I much prefer to be surprised and overjoyed by the music you decide to bring to the table than to bang a stick on a can demanding to hear this band or that label. (If I haven't learned to trust you by now, then I've completely missed the point of the Butterboy comps anyway.)

So if I make a request it's going to be comedy-related because I don't feel like I'm stepping on your toes that way. I urged you to unearth the Allan Sherman box because he'd been so forgotten for so long I figured if not Butterboy, then who?....and you knocked it out of the park. So - speaking of classic American absurdist humor that nowadays teeters on the edge of the cultural memory hole and threatens to plummet into complete obscurity: I ask you to help rescue THE FIRESIGN THEATRE.

When I was asked who or what was the Firesign Theatre the other day - and I found myself incapable of coming up with an answer that didn't further confuse the issue (well, imagine a gene-splice of the National Lampoon, Monty Python, SJ Perelman, and SCTV.....kinda sorta) I realized "Good Lord - this is a job for Butterboy! I hope." So with all due respect and humble gratitude - any chance of a BB Firesign box?

    1. Hi S D Joe,
Firstly Thank you for your kind words and encouragement.
I don't normally post comedy albums but I did post the Alan Sherman Box back in April this year.
Here is a link to that page.

    3. Thank you for that Firesign link BB! Some stuff there I've never seen.

I guess I might have a related short story to tell... why not...

Many years ago I stepped into an elevator on the ground floor of a big city high-rise with many floors. I was with friends and for some reason made some ridiculously sarcastic remark aloud as the doors were about to close... I don't even remember what I said. Usually I'd get a brief laugh from my friends who know my pension for outlandish puns and one-liners. To my surprise however, a complete stranger, a short and balding guy, standing next to me at the back of the elevator, shot back instantly with a perfectly witty response! After a brief pause from shock I quipped back and again got an instant retort from the guy! Ok.. now I feel like I'm being challenged so I continue the back and forth repartee. It seemed like minutes as the elevator stopped at many floors and we continued non-stop, trading humorous quips and one-liners between us until he got out on the very top floor of the tall city building we were in. I also have to admit the guy absolutely got in the last word as he was exiting! It was all unexpected and pretty silly and hilarious. I'm sure others that were captive for the ride were quite amused by our bantering. It was great and goofy. I thought WOW... that guy is GOOD. Only later did I come to know the quick-witted elevator stranger was in fact PETER BERGMAN who was on his way up to perform some of their Firesign routines with Philip Proctor at the expensive club which overlooked the city from the top floor. Pretty cool. I was impressed. That guy was wickedly talented and crazy!

That's my story.. thanks to you guys for reminding me.

    4. Hi MrRadio.
Always good to see you here.

You lifted me up with that story.

I have more stuff by Firesign which will end up in a lucky dip one day.

      Cheers.
