Ella Jane Fitzgerald was born April 25, 1917 in Newport News, Virginia. She grew up near New York. Her mother works in a laundry, her father having abandoned the marital home shortly after her birth. She then dreams of being a dancer.

"Ella, she has it, This I don't know what, That others don't have, Which puts us in a strange state ..." sang France Gall in 1987, in homage to the one that the jazz profession in the United States nicknamed "The First Lady Of Song", the first lady of the song, and awarded 13 Grammy Awards. Ella, alongside Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, Nina Simone, is considered the greatest singer in jazz. His virtuosity, his swing, his range covering no less than three octaves, his charisma, have never been equaled. Some even consider that she magnified scat to the point that no one has been able to come close to her ankle since. Ella Fitzgerald, with the Louis Armstrongs, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, carried the art of jazz so high that it can only be different after her and go in another direction.

She began singing at the age of 16 in 1934 at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York in one of the first Amateurs Nights she won, contributing as much to the glory of the Apollo as to her own. She was noticed by Chick Webb's orchestra, who hired her and performed at the Savoy in Harlem. She records a few hits with him, If You Can't Sing It, You'll Have to Swing It, Love and Kisses, but it's her version of the lullaby A Tisket, a Tasket, a track she wrote herself. , who made her known. When Chick Webb died in 1939, the orchestra continued under the name "Ella Fitzgerald and Her Famous Orchestra". She began a solo career in 1941. At first, a swing singer, she also tackled bebop. Sarah Vaughan is one of her only rivals in this area. She is the queen of scat, and she plays and plays blues, samba, gospel etc., and even Christmas carols. His concerts are often enriched by imitations of other singers; in particular, she perfectly imitates the voices and gestures of both Rose Murphy and Louis Armstrong. In 1942, she appeared in the film by comedy duo Abbott and Costello, Deux nigauds cow-boys, directed by Arthur Lubin.  In her own words, it is Marilyn Monroe who gives her great support in her career by literally imposing her at the Mocambo Club in Los Angeles. Indeed, Marilyn, a great admirer of Ella Fitzgerald, telephones the club boss in person and asks him to schedule the singer against the promise to reserve a table in the front row every night she performs. Unable to refuse such advertising, the boss accepts and Marilyn keeps her word.

Ella left Decca in 1955. The company Verve was created for her by her manager Norman Granz. It was he who imposed it worldwide by making him record records that would become very great jazz classics, the famous Song Books, dedicated to the great American composers: George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Jerôme Kern, Rodgers & Hart, etc. With the Duke Ellington Orchestra, she toured Europe and North America. She performs in concert with all the most important groups and soloists like Oscar Peterson, Count Basie (On the Sunny Side of the Street), Roy Eldridge, Joe Pass (Speak Love), Dizzy Gillespie and the Tommy Flanagan trio. She also sings with other jazz voices like Nat King Cole or Frank Sinatra. Her role is akin to that of a "vocal instrumentalist". (Wikipedia)
