AMERICAN FOLK
VA - Anthology of American Folk Music [1952] (4 x CD's)
Arguably the most historically significant document of American folk songs and styles ever released, the Anthology of American Folk Music contains recordings from the pre-war era of some of songs that have since become the centerpiece of the American folk music songbook. Songs like "Henry Lee," "Peg & Awl," "Ommie Wise," "Stackalee," "Frankie," "John the Revelator," "Coo Coo Bird," and "See That My Grave is Kept Clean" have been recorded so often in the decades since that they essentially form the collective foundation for folk, blues, country, spiritual, and Americana musics. Many of the artists included were then considered obscure, but are now legendary figures to anyone familiar with the evolution of American music thanks to this collection: The Carter Family, Mississippi John Hurt, Blind Willie Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Clarence Ashley, Charlie Patton, and Dick Justice are examples. Those familiar with Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters, Doc Watson, Johnny Cash, Joan Baez, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Nick Cave, Son House, or the White Stripes will find some familiar tunes in their earliest forms included on this powerful and monumental collection.
Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music, Volume 4 is a two-disc compilation of twenty-eight American folk recordings originally released on 78 rpm records between 1927 and 1940, issued in May 2000 on Revenant Records, catalogue #211. Compiled by experimental filmmaker and notable eccentric Harry Smith as the fourth album of his Anthology of American Folk Music set from 1952, it was never completed by Smith himself. While the CD is out of print, an LP version has been issued, along with the other three volumes, on the Portland-based Mississippi Records label. (Amazon)
An amazingly comprehensive anthology of American roots music. Absolutely essential for anyone really interested in the origins of all modern musical genres.
