Stephen's Quote Of The Day:

"Cliff made Move It, which is a classic rock'n'roll record, in the summer of 1958 - Bruce and I were turning 17 and Cliff was turning 18. Before that there were pretty gruesome attempts at rock'n'roll in Britain, mainly variety acts and cheeky chappies impersonating Americans."      Hank B Marvin

    1. What a lot of 'Cods' as those 'cheeky chappies' might say. Celebrities say the most silly things. I suppose Hank in his dotage, poor dear, has forgotten making Summer Holiday, The Young Ones and a host of other low cost variety movies with 'cheeky chappies' such as Melvin Hayes and comediennes such as Una Stubbs?

'Move It, Apache and a few others were rock classics' but lets not forget that Cliff and the Drifters were promoted by Norrie Paramour and the EMI machine, delivered up, Living Doll, Bachelor Boy, Travellin Light, The Minute You're Gone, Constantly amongst many other MOR pop songs, did Eurovision three times between them and hosted their own TV variety show. Its hardly Gene Vincent or Jerry Lee in their prime.

The reality is Tommy Steele (the most notable of those prior cheeky chappies) became a far more accomplished actor and entertainer than Cliff would ever be (an ancient 20 year old when he had his first rock n' roll hit and a proper Cockney to boot unlike Cliff!).

PS And Cliff wasn't impersonating Elvis on Move It (curled lip n'all) was he?

Apologies but its gets my goat when celebrities rewrite history to make themselves sound better than they actually were
