BYRD SOUNDS
VA - The Sound of Byrds (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3
The Byrd sound is a combination of Jangly Guitar sounds (McGuinn’s Rickenbacker 12-string) and the strong vocal harmonies of the Byrds which is what really defined their sound.
The Jangle or jingle-jangle is a sound typically characterized by un-distorted, treble-heavy electric guitars (particularly 12-strings) played in a droning chordal style (by strumming or arpeggiating). The sound is mainly associated with pop music as well as 1960's guitar bands, folk rock, and 1980's indie music. It is sometimes classed as its own subgenre, jangle pop. Music critics use the term to suggest guitar pop that evokes a bright mood. Despite forerunners such as the Searchers and the Everly Brothers, it was the Beatles and the Byrds who are commonly credited with launching the popularity of the jangle. The name derives from the lyric "in the jingle-jangle morning, I'll come following you" from the Byrds' 1965 rendition of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man". Although many subsequent jangle bands drew significantly from the Byrds, they were not necessarily folk rock as the Byrds were. Since the 1960s, the jangle sound has crossed numerous genres, including power pop, psychedelia, new wave, post-punk, and lo-fi. In the 1980's, the most prominent bands of early indie rock were jangle pop groups. (Wikipedia)
In 2018, Guitar World contributor Damian Fanelli cited McGuinn's "distinctive 12-string Rickenbacker jangle" as among the "most influential and imitated guitar sounds of the past 53 years." It was McGuinn’s Rickenbacker 12-string, but what really defined their sound was their vocal harmonies. Four of the five original members (McGuinn, Gene Clark, David Crosby, and Chris Hillman) were superb vocalists, as were most of the members that drifted through over the years. Like CSN&Y after them, the vocal harmonizing and songwriting played a far bigger role in their sound than the admittedly fine guitar work by Stills on the one hand and McGuinn on the other.
Here are 60 tracks by other artist who carry on that Byrdsy sound. Enjoy!

ReplyDeleteHi Pol.
DeleteThere are some great tunes with that Jangly Guitar sounds.
I hope you enjoy the choices.
Cheers.
I will listen carefully to these 3 compilations. I always liked the Byrds, and here there are many bands I like, the Plimsouls, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Jayhawks, Television, Pretenders, Primal Scream, Long Ryders, Three O'clock for the artists of the 80's, I also think of Paul Westerberg. I will listen to these 3 Cd's all weekend. Thank you BB for this Byrds tribute. I appreciate it!

How difficult it is to capture the "spirit" of The Byrds!
ReplyDeleteMany have tried and very, very few have succeeded.
I was happy to see "Space and Time" perfomed by "Fraternal Order of the All" at the opening of the album, one of the few songs that succeeds.
I will listen to this collection with great attention, as the Byrds is without a doubt my favorite US band.
All the best.
José
Hi Jose,
DeleteI trust you are well.
It is a very difficult task but some do it well. My favorite Byrd-sy track is "Space and Time".
I hope you get enjoyment from this compilation. Some surprises, some possibly questionable and some will make you think.
Cheers
BB, you already know that I like the majority of the compilations you post, but the ones you create are exceptional and this one is going to be one of my favourites [“You Tell Me Why” by Beau Brummels & Tom Petty’s “Listen To Her”, are two of the reasons for this feeling]
ReplyDeleteI wish the best for all of you!!
Hi Manolis,
DeleteI hope this one lives up to expectations.
Enjoy the weekend ahead.
Cheers.
No love for 'Don't Fear the Reaper' by Blue Öyster Cult. Would have fitted nicely, though. ;-)
ReplyDeleteGreat comp, as always.

Hi Il Commendatore
DeleteOver 250 self-made compilations with multiple CD's usually 3 pert sets, so far, but as you know can exceed 6 per set at times. Let's see how the next 250 sets go.
Cheers.
Great idea! The influence of The Byrds is incommensurable. But it's very difficult to reach their level of excellency. Looking forward if these ones had succeeded. All the best.
ReplyDeleteHi Racati,
DeleteThere are many that should delight. I hope you will enjoy these.
Cheers.
