POWER POP

VA - Power Pop Anthems The 100 Greatest Power Pop Songs of All Time [2021] (5 x CD's)

Pete Townshend, the guitarist and principal songwriter for The Who, is credited as the originator of the name “power pop.” He used the phrase to describe the type of music The Who performed in the late 1960's - upbeat, catchy, hook-driven - but the name wouldn’t catch on until the 1970's. "Pictures of Lily" was included in the Who album Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy, a compilation of previously released singles. Townshend coined the term "power pop" when he used it to describe the song in a May 1967 interview with NME.

My friend "K" says the following:

I see a few have been requesting a really good power pop compilation on your blog today.  I thought you might be interested in my own power pop compilation: Power Pop Anthems: The 100 Greatest Power Pop Songs of All Time (5xCD's) (2021)

Following weeks and weeks of extensive research reading through critics polls, readers and listeners polls, fan lists, TV countdowns, online discussion forums votes (Steve Hoffman), Will Birch insight and favourites listed, Wikipedia info, my own recollections and favourites, I have finally settled upon my 100 Greatest Power Pop Songs of All Time collection.

My goal was to include the very very best of the genre, the cream of the crop, and to add a number of tracks you just never see on compilations due to licensing, music rights issues, etc.. These are the top 100 songs which are mentioned and feature most on all the power pop discussion forums and critics and fan lists. (K)

So here without further adieu is "K's" Box Set of Power pop. All 100 tracks are a delight to Power Pop fans.    Thank you "K".

  3. A marvellous compilation K. Truly appreciate the work you have put in. Of course the fun thing with these are what tracks would have made my Top 100. I probably would have had a dB's track and a Sunnyboy's track, but having said that I have no idea what I would have cut from your list. They are all truly great songs.

  15. A great compilation indeed! But I didn't kown that Beatles, Easybeats, Who, Zombies, Byrds, Searchers, Monkees were power pop. Very surprising.

    1. Hi Racati,
I guess the majority of people who commented on the lists used to define this compilation think otherwise. There are many more bands I would also include. Possibly a 2nd Volume will show itself someday.

      Cheers.

  16. A most wonderful (and very intelligently compiled) collection of truly great POWERPOP: I am enjoying it tremendously .. and there are so many personal memories & stories to nearly each one of these songs. Just take "Baby Blue", the very last track in the very last episode of BREAKING BAD, and how fitting it was there and then. And now here it is, with 99 more of its kind. Many thanks, "K" & Mr. B.! Best, TC

  17. I love these collections as much for the questions they raise, as for the excellent content they provide especially when its based on the court of Internet opinion.

For example how is it that the quirky 'Start' with its 'Taxman' riff by the Jam is included when what some others might believe are the vastly superior quartet of "In The City", "When You're Young", "Strange Town" and "Going Underground" are overlooked?

How is it that the masters of sunshine and surf, the Beach Boys, and the always jazz orientated Zombies, both wonderful bands but largely not remembered for the 'force' of their songs, sit alongside the Beatles and the Who but the endless power of the mid sixties Kinks, Stones, Yardbirds and Pretties are not?

Intriguing stuff. The court of Internet opinion is an amazing phenomena. Anyway lots of great stuff in this collection which no doubt will serve to encourage many further offerings. Many thanks K & BB! I look forward to listening to those tracks I don't recognise!

PS And a shout for some who missed the cut. Here's to : the Reaction, Orange, The Action, the Chords, The Purple Hearts, The Donkeys, Squire, The Birds, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Back To Zero, The Boyfriends, The Attack, The Syn, The Rezillos / Revillos and The Rivals (there are many more).......

    1. Hi Anona Mause.
I see what you mean. We all have differing opinions of great songs and sometimes we agree wholeheartedly whilst other times our views are diverse. My take on Power Pop was posted a long time back (3 years ago) it is here if you are interested.
      https://butterboycompilations.blogspot.com/2019/01/va-powerpop-explosion-volume-1-volume-2.html

I think K's set is outstanding for what he stated as the criteria used to pull it together.
Love your list by the way.

      Cheers.
