K SPECIAL SUMMER OF LOVE

K's  60s Summer of Love  SPECIAL  ,        VA - 60s Summer of Love - 167 Iconic Hits that Defined the Summer of Love (55th Anniversary 1967-2022 Super Deluxe Edition) [2022] (7 x CD's)

In celebration of 55 years since the Summer of Love in 1967, here is my own compilation of the 167 greatest songs which really define that moment and era.  On June 25, 1967, the BBC broadcast the Beatles singing “All You Need Is Love” to an estimated 400-700 million people around the globe. That song served as an anthem for the Summer of Love and love itself became the symbol of the burgeoning cultural movement in 1967.  While not every song featured here was released in 1967, a few certainly inspired the Summer of Love, while others were later inspired by it.  Although The Who performed 'My Generation' at the Monterey International Pop Festival in Monterey California in 1967, which was a career defining moment, the song was actually released in 1965.

The Summer of Love had at least two dry runs. In 1965, dozens of young revelers gathered in Virginia City, Nevada, to spend the summer tripping on LSD, designing psychedelic posters, and playing music in frontier drag at the Red Dog Saloon. When they returned to San Francisco, these early hippies - the word appeared in print for the first time in September 1965 - began hosting dances for up to 300 people.  The next summer, the Grateful Dead led a six-week amusement at Rancho Olompali, the rural property they rented in Marin County. Hundreds of visitors came to play music, swim in the large pool, and trip freely.  They had fashioned a small but active arts and music community whose members also liked to dance. In the years before and after the Summer of Love, this community essentially invented the modern rock concert - that familiar combination of light shows, extended sets, freestyle dancing, and psycho-activity that still exists today. For some of these hippies, 1966 was the peak summer.

Following weeks of extensive research reading through critics and experts' polls, scanning through Summer of Love playlists, plus fan polls, Summer of Love blogs, online discussion forums votes (Steve Hoffman), Wikipedia info, Billboard and UK Charts, my own recollections and favourites, I have finally settled upon my 167 greatest Summer of Love hits compilation.

These are the songs which feature most on the many many lists of the best and greatest Summer of Love songs ever released.

There has never been a really good official expansive Summer of Love compilation with an extensive overview and cross section of the amazing music released, and like my previous collections, my goal was to include the very very best of the genre, the cream of the crop, and to add a number of hard to find and often rare tracks you just never see on compilations due to licensing restrictions, music rights issues, etc.

Compiled as always using the very latest and highest quality digital remasters for superior sound quality and enjoyment. ALL tracks are the 100% 1960s original studio versions, NO later re-recordings or 'live in concert' releases only the original 7” 45 single mixes, with many in their original mono form and longer album versions are included in this 7CD set.

Also, check out the selection of PDF magazines and jpg posters related to the Summer of Love in the Artwork folder.

Hope you enjoy this far out and groovy selection of tunes this summer!

    2. Hi Butterboy. Wonderful job, thank you. I have added just one song to my copy as I think it's the perfect Summer Of Love piece. Scott McKenzie's What's The Difference. He ended up doing a trilogy of the song over the years and really, it should have been put out as a double A side.

      A great tune, agreed.

  7. Just on first glance I see a couple of chronological boners: "I'm A Believer" was from1966, Spencer Davis's "Keep On Running" actually came out in 1965! It either is or isn't a comprehensive record of 1967, and on its face it definitely isn't.

    1. Hi Johnathan F. King.
As I stated, a few songs were recorded and released before 1967, but many of those were performed at festivals and concerts in 1967.

"I'm a Believer" is a song written by Neil Diamond and recorded by the Monkees in 1966 with the lead vocals by Micky Dolenz.
The single, produced by Jeff Barry, hit the number-one spot on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart for the week ending December 31, 1966, and remained there for seven weeks, becoming the last No. 1 hit of 1966 and the biggest-selling single for all of 1967.
Billboard ranked the record as the No. 5 song for 1967.
The song was No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart for four weeks in January and February 1967 and reached the top spot in numerous countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Ireland.

      Cheers.
