K's 1971 SPECIAL   -   VA -1971, The Year That Music Changed Everything (Music Inspired by the Apple TV+ Original Series) [2021] (8 x CD's)

A FANTASTIC sprawling 150 track overview of the greatest music released in 1971 inspired by the Apple TV+ Original Series - 1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything. Apple initially compiled 100 tracks; it was good but not great. There were a few songs from 1970 and 1972 included, which was inaccurate, plus a few later re-recordings where they didn't have the rights to the original recordings. I decided to re-compile it, removing those tracks and using the remaining as a basis to add a further 50+ key tracks from 1971, which were either released in 1971, or were big hits in 1971 on both sides of the Atlantic.

A woeful year for pop which went all Eurovision on us with Clodagh Rogers and Middle of the Road (‘Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep’) and a quiet year for the rockers, though The Who did produce probably their finest album, Who’s Next, from the wreckage of another rock opera-style project, Lifehouse. The Stones cut ‘Brown Sugar’, which was either about heroin or a racist/sexist ditty. Thanks, chaps. Jim Morrison took his last bath in Paris in July, dying of a heart attack and shutting The Doors forever.

Gone: Benny Hill, to the lasting shame of our pop-picking parents, was number one for weeks with ‘Ernie (Fastest Milkman in the West)’, a hellishly feeble, innuendo-ridden comedy pop caper.

Album of the year: Who’s Next - The Who

Single of the year: 'Imagine' - John Lennon

Band/artist of the year: The Who

1971 belonged to: The Who, Marvin Gaye, Sly Stone

Key moment of the year: Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s rock musical soundtrack outstrips sales of Sgt. Pepper and heralds a three-decade Reich in the West End to come. George Harrison was the busiest ex-Beatle in 1971. First came All Things Must Pass, a triple album featuring the single ‘My Sweet Lord’, later found to have been nicked “unconsciously’ by George from The Chiffons’ ‘She’s So Fine’. Then came his involvement in the concerts For Bangladesh, an early Live Aid-style effort on the part of rockers such as Dylan, Clapton, etc, to bring relief to famine victims. At the New York concert, Ravi Shankar was thunderously applauded after ten minutes of sitar work, only to inform the audience that actually he’d been tuning up.

Soul was revived greatly in 1971, with Curtis Mayfield‘s galvanising ‘Move On Up’, Sly Stone‘s ‘There’s a Riot Going On’ and Marvin Gaye's ‘What’s Going On’ looking ahead to another fertile and turbulent decade in black music.

Over 10 hours of classic pop, rock, funk, soul, jazz, reggae and country.

  6. I mean that's just dazzling, how much genius in one year?!? Ok, I'm kinda biased as I had my global release in 1971 myself (thanks Mum), but that is a simply jaw-dropping selection. Wow. Thankyou once again K and BB.

  7. Possibly the most interesting collection yet although wasn't it a pretty good years for Mungo Jerry too? Other than that having lived through it I can't imagine that 1971 changed anything but thats Apple's problem (once again Follywood is no doubt attempting to rewrite history).

Whilst SK has pinpointed most of the highlights and lowlights (RIP Jim) generally it was a most unmemorable year even if the Bay City Rollers got their debut (and probably the best thing they ever did)

    Many Thanks SK

    1. Apple's series was based on the excellent 2016 David Hepworth book "Never A Dull Moment" which sets out just why 1971 was such a pivotal year not only for music but also politics and society in general. Have a read, it may surprise you just how influential a year it was (but I take your point, one person's golden year is another's ennui). Can't fault that music, though!

Apple originally compiled 100 songs, but has now been reduced to 81:
