Mott the Hoople were an English rock band formed in Herefordshire. Originally known as the Doc Thomas Group, the group changed their name after signing with Island Records in 1969. The band released albums at the beginning of the 1970s but failed to find commercial success. On the verge of breaking up, the band were encouraged by David Bowie to stay together. Bowie wrote the glam rock song "All the Young Dudes" for them, which became a huge commercial success in 1972. Bowie subsequently produced an album of the same name for them, which continued their success. Despite personnel changes, the band had further commercial success with Mott (1973) and The Hoople (1974). Lead singer Ian Hunter departed the band in 1974, after which the band's commercial fortunes began to dwindle. They remained together with continuing personnel changes until their break-up in 1980. Mott The Hoople - Mental Train (The Island Years 1969-1971) is a box set that contains six CDs with 89 songs of the band’s recordings from their early years at Island Records. It includes their first four albums, Mott the Hoople, Mad Shadows, Wildlife, and Brain Capers, as well as rare and unreleased tracks, live performances, and radio sessions. There areg 30 previously unreleased recordings. It also comes with a 52-page book with photos, memorabilia, and liner notes by Kris Needs. The box set is a deep dive into the wild, wooly years before Mott the Hoople discovered glam. In other words, it’s Mott the Hoople before they had anything resembling a hit but were still one of the hardest, heaviest, and weirdest rock bands to roam the land, and one of the most prolific, too. This box set covers a mere three years, but it was three years where they released four albums, piling up B-sides and other strays along the way. The box set is a comprehensive and definitive collection of the band’s music and legacy, covering their transition from a cult rock band to a glam rock sensation.  

FYI - Track 10 on CD3 "Midnight Lady" is listed as the single A-Side (WIP 6105). However, it really is an instrumental backing track, which is one minute longer than the version which was released as the single. This version appears to be the backing track which was recorded at Island Studios and which was referenced in the booklet provided with Mott The Hoople - All The Young Dudes, The Anthology, rather than the single which was produced by Shadow Morton and recorded at Ultra-Sonic Studios on Long Island.
