CHICO HAMILTON QUINTET
VA - The Complete Pacific Jazz Recordings Of The Chico Hamilton Quintet [1997] (6 x CDs)
Foreststorn "Chico" Hamilton (Born September 20, 1921, and died at the age of 92 on November 25, 2013) was an American jazz drummer and bandleader. He came to prominence as sideman for Lester Young, Gerry Mulligan, Count Basie, and Lena Horne. Hamilton became a bandleader, first with a quintet featuring the cello as a lead instrument, an unusual choice for a jazz band in the 1950s, and subsequently leading bands that performed cool jazz, post-bop, and jazz fusion.
The Chico Hamilton Quintet was one of the most original and distinctive groups in the West Coast jazz scene, known for their adventurous and unconventional approach to music. Consisting of Buddy Collette on reeds (flute, clarinet, alto, and tenor), guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Carson Smith, and the drummer/leader, the most distinctive element in the group's identity was cellist Fred Katz. The band could play quite softly, blending together elements of bop and classical music into their popular sound and occupying their own niche. They experimented with different instruments, such as flute, cello, guitar, and bassoon, and created a unique sound that was both sophisticated and accessible.
VA - The Complete Pacific Jazz Recordings Of The Chico Hamilton Quintet [1997] is a limited-edition box set that contains the entire output of the Chico Hamilton Quintet for the Pacific Jazz label from 1955 to 1959. It features some of the most innovative and influential jazz musicians of the time, such as Buddy Collette, Jim Hall, Paul Horn, Fred Katz, and Carson Smith. The box set includes three full albums (The Original Chico Hamilton Quintet, The Three Faces Of Chico, and South Pacific In Hi-Fi) and many previously unreleased tracks, covering a wide range of styles and genres, from cool jazz to chamber jazz to Latin jazz.
This box is a massive dose of the man and his group at the absolute top of their game. Investing in it is not recommended for those with a casual interest in jazz, but for anybody that desires a firm knowledge of the music of this era, seeking out the core components of this set in some form is a must. Chico Hamilton might not be a household name, but it’s musicians like him who provide jazz with its eternal kick. So, If you are a fan of jazz or just curious about this legendary band, you should definitely check out this box set. The musical gems on the set will delight your ears and enrich your mind.
As a special treat I am including the movie "Jazz on a Summer’s Day" a concert film set at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island, directed by commercial and fashion photographer Bert Stern and Aram Avakian, who also edited the film. The Columbia Records jazz producer, George Avakian, was the musical director of the film. The film mixes images of water and the city with the performers and audience at the festival. It also features scenes of the 1958 America's Cup yacht races. The film is largely without dialog or narration (except for periodic announcements by emcee Willis Conover).
The film features performances by Jimmy Giuffre; Thelonious Monk; Sonny Stitt; Anita O'Day; Dinah Washington; Gerry Mulligan; Chuck Berry; Chico Hamilton Quintet with Eric Dolphy; and Louis Armstrong, with Jack Teagarden. Also appearing are Buck Clayton, Jo Jones, Armando Peraza, and Eli's Chosen Six, the Yale College student ensemble that included trombonist Roswell Rudd, shown driving around Newport in a convertible jalopy, playing Dixieland. As was scheduled in advance and announced in the program, the last performer Saturday night was Mahalia Jackson, who sang a one-hour program beginning at midnight, thus ushering in Sunday morning. The film concluded with her performance of The Lord's Prayer.
Chico Hamilton Quintet with Eric Dolphy can be found at the 51 min position of the movie.
Enjoy!
