WOODY GUTHRIE
Woody Guthrie - Woody At 100. The Woody Guthrie Centennial Collection [2012] (3 x CDs)
Woody Guthrie, one of the most influential folk singers and songwriters in American history. He was a legend of American folk music, whose songs captured the spirit, struggles, and hopes of his generation. His influence can be felt in many artists who followed him, from Bob Dylan to Bruce Springsteen. To celebrate his centennial in 2012, Smithsonian Folkways released a box set that showcases his remarkable legacy and reveals some of his hidden gems. The box set contains three CDs with 57 tracks, spanning Guthrie’s career from the 1930s to the 1950s. It includes his classics, such as “This Land Is Your Land”, “Pretty Boy Floyd”, and “Hard Travelin’”, as well as 21 previously unreleased performances and six never-before-heard original songsrecordings that have never been released before. Among them are six original songs that Guthrie wrote but never recorded, such as “Better World A-Comin’” and “When That Great Ship Went Down”.
The box set also comes with a 150-page book that contains essays, photos, and sketches by Guthrie and others. The book offers a glimpse into his life, music, and legacy, as well as the historical and cultural context of his times. The book also features commentary by Jeff Place and Robert Santelli, who are experts on Guthrie’s work and history. They curated the box set and selected the songs and recordings that best represent Guthrie’s style, themes, and impact.
The box set has received critical acclaim from various sources, such as Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and AllMusic. It is considered a definitive collection of Guthrie’s music and a valuable resource for fans and scholars alike.
