Elmore James - King of the Slide Guitar, The Complete Chess, Chief & Fire Sessions [1992] (4 x CDs)

ELMORE JAMES

Elmore James - King of the Slide Guitar, The Complete Chess, Chief & Fire Sessions [1992] (4 x CDs)

No two ways about it, the most influential slide guitarist of the postwar period was Elmore James , hands down. Although his early demise from heart failure kept him from enjoying the fruits of the '60s blues revival as his contemporaries Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf did, James left a wide influential trail behind him. And that influence continues to the present time, in approach, attitude and tone, in just about every guitar player who puts a slide on his finger and wails the blues. This Out of Print 4-CD Box Set has the complete sessions he cut for Chess, Chief and Fire. Also, it contains his first song: "I Believe My Time Ain't Long (Dust My Broom)" with Sonny Boy Williamson on harp (a session for Trumpet in 1951).

If you are a fan of blues guitar, you owe it to yourself to get this box set. Elmore James was one of the most influential and innovative slide guitarists of all time, and this collection showcases his best work from three different labels: Chess, Chief and Fire. You will hear the evolution of his style to his more refined and expressive recordings in the early 1960s. You will also discover some rare and unreleased tracks, such as “Strange Angels” and “Hand in Hand”, that reveal his versatility and creativity.

This box set contains 73 tracks, spanning over four hours of music. The sound quality is excellent, thanks to the remastering by Andy Pearce and Sean Cotter. Also included is a 30-page booklet compiled by Les Fancourt. The booklet includes a detailed biography, discography, session notes and photos of Elmore James.

This box set is a must-have for any blues lover, as it captures the essence of Elmore James’ legacy. He was the king of the slide guitar, and his influence can be heard in countless artists, from Muddy Waters to Jimi Hendrix to Stevie Ray Vaughan. His songs are timeless classics, full of emotion, energy and soul. His guitar playing is stunning, with a distinctive tone, technique and phrasing. He was a master of the blues, and this box set proves it. (B)

  1. IMHO, the man most responsible for the blues/rock guitar genre. Even Duane Allman said he was the greatest slide guitarist who ever lived. Many thanks, BB.
