Elvis Costello - Just Like Candy, His Most Underrated (A Butterboy Compilation) (5 x CD's)
Declan Patrick MacManus, OBE (born 25 August 1954), better known by his stage name Elvis Costello, is a British pop musician, singer, songwriter, composer, record producer, author, television presenter, and occasional actor. He began his career as part of London's pub rock scene in the early 1970's and later became associated with the first wave of the British punk and new wave movement that emerged in the mid-to-late 1970's. His critically acclaimed debut album, My Aim Is True, was released in 1977. Shortly after recording it, he formed the Attractions as his backing band. His second album, This Year's Model, was released in 1978, and was ranked number 11 by Rolling Stone on its list of the best albums from 1967–1987. His third album, Armed Forces, was released in 1979, and features his highest-charting single "Oliver's Army" (number 2 in the UK). His first three albums all appeared on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Costello and the Attractions toured and recorded together for the better part of a decade, though differences between them caused a split by 1986. Much of Costello's work since has been as a solo artist, though reunions with members of the Attractions have been credited to the group over the years. Costello's lyrics employ a wide vocabulary and frequent wordplay. His music has drawn on many diverse genres; one critic described him as a "pop encyclopedia", able to "reinvent the past in his own image". He has won multiple awards in his career, including a Grammy Award, and has twice been nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male Singer. In 2003, Costello and the Attractions were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Costello number 80 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. All this without a number One Hit. (Highest position 2)
Elvis Costello is the most underappreciated artist of all time. His material sounds so sophisticated, eclectic and fresh even after almost 40 years. It's difficult to limit the number underrated songs by this incredibly prolific songwriter. Most of his songs are underrated. Roy Orbison thought enough of Costello's 'worst album' to cover "The Comedians". (Wikipedia)
Elvis Costello who turns 64 in August and has been around for 40+ years creating great music. He is one of my favorite artists. He makes me laugh, he makes me cry, he makes me think and he makes me believe what he sings. He is a brilliant artist as a singer songwriter but is also a magical interpreter of others' songs. Here are deep cuts from his catalog presented in date order (except track 1). Enjoy these 108 tracks.

Very tasty indeed - many thanks
ReplyDeleteHi Bob Neish.
DeleteI love candy too.
Cheers.
Being from France and also being a big admirator of all his works, I can tell in France Costello is UNDERRATED. I was in his concert last weeks (some extract here https://www.imagenetz.de/mZCgU) now he has to force a bit the voice but the guy is still curious and generous. Speaking about generous Thanks for this selection, I know almost all, I stop a while from "Juliet Letters" A marvelous souvenir on "Painted From Memory" then nothing till "Wise Up Ghost And Other Songs" Still a lot to discover. Sorry to say so much, but Costello has a specific place in my all musical life.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing that, DevantF.
DeleteSomehow, Elvis Costello finds a place in everyone's collections. It may not be every album, however at some period in time during his career, his music will be there. I like to look at his whole history, the changes and the highlights.
Cheers.
I always kept Allison as a name for a daughter, but we had three boys.
ReplyDeleteThanks BB for all the tracks I don't know.
Hi lemonflag.
DeleteI loved that track the first moment I heard it. There was an acoustic version I heard on a single which was just terrific. He is a fabulous artist to explore.
Cheers.
I was lucky enough to see him several times in his hay day. I remember the spinning songbook . I think I saw the first one of those in mid 80's in Los Angeles. Rode a bus to to get to it. What a show!
ReplyDeleteHi Pol.
DeleteYou are luckier than me...
Cheers.
Superb collection!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Montax.
DeleteCheers.
Can never have too much Elvis Costello in the vault; it will be nice to raise the probability of hearing one of these songs come up on the endless shuffle play. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi MrDave.
DeleteA favorite of mine.
Cheers.
