SPECIAL BOOTLEG BOXSET
JIGGY AND THE PASSIONS – Fan Remixes of Outtakes from the BEACH BOYS’ albums CARL AND THE PASSIONS – So Tough and HOLLAND, and a couple of other surprises! (4 x CDs) (Flac)
Before anything else, I want to thank PtG for making this terrific set available to Butterboy's Compilation Blog visitors. It was Originally posted at http://jiggy22.blogspot.com/ , but posted here with the kind permission of Jiggy.
There is always a lot of excitement when a new Beach Boys Archival Boxset gets released. And this excitement continued with the release of the Beach Boys’ 6 CD set titled SAIL ON SAILOR in late 2022. The new set offered remastered editions of the Beach Boys’ albums, CARL and THE PASSIONS – “So Tough” (1972) and HOLLAND (1973), but also included a treasure chest of outtakes, live recordings, demos and alternate versions, which in some cases even featured previous unreleased alternate lyrics to some of these songs. This SAIL ON SAILOR release also included the FULL Live Beach Boys’ Concert recorded at Carnegie Hall, on November 23, 1972. So much to celebrate especially for “hard-core” Beach Boys’ fans who are always begging for more material from the archives.
But some fans take it a step further. The collection featured here is also what happens when a lot of new outtakes are released. JIGGY AND THE PASSIONS is one fan’s attempt to create even more new and alternate mixes using the newly released outtakes and combining and remixing other existing pieces to create unique and different takes of the songs which may not have been included on the ‘official’ release, or to just simply experiment with the “pieces” to see what might or could be done. Jiggy, has done just exactly that.
Disc One and Disc Two
This set includes full track remixes for all of the regular tracks included on BOTH albums. Jiggy has also mixed pieces of outtakes which were incomplete, to create some new mixes for a different listening experience. Some of these mixes will sound different and perhaps awkward to some, but many of Jiggy’s remixes do work well, and sound quite refreshing. And this will hopefully provide the listener with several “alternate” mixes on several well-loved Beach Boys’ songs to enjoy.
See the list below, with Jiggy’s details of what was combined for the mixes he created. Some will sound very similar to the originals, but listen closely and you will discover some things which may surprise. Jiggy’s done a nice job on many of the tracks bringing out sounds you may not have heard before!! Fun stuff!!
But there is more!!
Disc Three
In late 1972 and 1973, the Beach Boys were one of the premier live bands touring the world. There was some pressure for the band to release a new “Live” album. The original plan was to release a single LP live album, using tracks which were recorded during the 1972 Winter Tour at shows in Passaic, New Jersey and also at the Cargenie Hall show, mentioned above. There were track listings considered and acetates made (which still exist) for this single LP live album. Eventually the idea was scrapped and in 1973 the two LP set THE BEACH BOYS IN CONCERT was released instead using many of the songs recorded in 1972, but also others recorded during the Beach Boys 1973 Summer Tour. But in late 2022, some of these other live tracks recorded in 1972, were posted on Bandcamp, for a few days by the Iconic Organization who now control the Beach Boys’ catalog. The tracks were quickly removed, and some have speculated and suggested Iconic issued the tracks on Bandcamp (some say they may have also been issued on was another website as well) to simply extend the copyrights. Fans were upset with this move by Iconic calling it a “copyright dump”, rather than a prequel to another archival release. Either way, Jiggy has taken the tracks which were briefly issued and created one of the original line ups for the single LP CONCERT albums which were being considered. You can hear this single LP CONCERT album on Disc Three of this set. Do note, several of these tracks DID end up on the two LP set THE BEACH BOYS IN CONCERT in 1973, although there might have been some “sweetening” done before they were included.
But wait, there’s still more.
Disc Four
2nd FLAME ALBUM: As many Beach Boys’ fans know, The Flames were a band from South Africa, which had developed a large following with several local hits, including a “Number One” with a cover of Jerry Butler’s “For Your Precious Love”. The most famous line-up of the band included the three brothers: Ricky, Steve and Brother Fataar, and Blondie Chaplain. They relocated to the UK in the late 1960s, and met many in the industry including the Beach Boys who were touring the UK in 1969. After meeting the band they were invited to Los Angeles to record an album which Carl Wilson produced. The band’s name was changed to The FLAME and the album was released in 1970. It did receive some positive reviews, but not enough to garner any album sales. A second album was recorded but was never released.
Soon after, the Flame disbanded, and as many know, Ricky Fataar and Blondie Chaplin joined the Beach Boys for a couple of years in the early 1970s, and appeared and wrote material for both the CARL & THE PASSIONS – So Tough, and HOLLAND albums, and toured with the Band during this same time.
Since then there had been some attempted negotiations to release BOTH albums, which has proven so far, to be unsuccessful. In an effort to extend the copyrights on the 2nd Flame album, Iconic issued the tracks for a short period of time in 2021, again on Bandcamp. And like the live tracks mentioned on Disc Three, they were quickly removed. Still when the songs were issued all appeared in edited versions. If the original song was less than 5 minutes long, they issued a shorter edited version. If the original song was longer than 5 minutes they issued an edited version of the song lasting to just about the 5 minute mark. Disc Four of this set, includes these “edited” tracks intended for the 2nd FLAME album. The notes below show the tracks issued, followed by the length of each track. The edits are obvious, but fans will, at least, get to hear what the songs sound like even if not complete. The move by Iconic was to protect their copyrights to the material and to prevent any “unofficial” releases from happening.
Hopefully BOTH albums recorded for BROTHER RECORDS by the FLAME, will get the full remix and reissue treatment someday soon.

ReplyDeleteBrilliant!!! I love these little experiments with music! This reminds me of all those Beatle Remixers projects floating around the net. Their classic works still remains untouched so there shouldn't be any complaints about "messing with the classics." Thanks for your hard work Jiggy, and thanks for bringing this to our attention BB!
