GEORGE MARTIN

VA - Produced By George Martin 50 Years In Recording [2001] (6 x CDs)

VA - Produced By George Martin 50 Years In Recording,  is a 2001 various artists compilation box set of tracks produced by Sir George Martin.  This box set was issued to commemorate Martin's 50-year career as a record producer. The recordings are not in chronological order but are instead grouped together by common themes.

Sir George Henry Martin CBE (3 January 1926 – 8 March 2016) was an English record producer, arranger, composer, conductor, and musician. He was commonly referred to as the "Fifth Beatle" because of his extensive involvement in each of the Beatles' original albums. Martin's formal musical expertise and interest in novel recording practices facilitated the group's rudimentary musical education and desire for new musical sounds to record. Most of their orchestral arrangements and instrumentation were written or performed by Martin, and he played piano or keyboards on a number of their records. Their collaborations resulted in popular, highly acclaimed records with innovative sounds, such as the 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the first rock album to win a Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

Martin's career spanned more than six decades in music, film, television and live performance. Before working with the Beatles and other pop musicians, he produced comedy and novelty records in the 1950s and early 1960s as the head of EMI's Parlophone label, working with Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan and Bernard Cribbins, among others. His work with other Liverpool rock groups in the early–mid 1960s helped popularize the Merseybeat sound. In 1965, he left EMI and formed his own production company, Associated Independent Recording.

AllMusic has described Martin as the "world's most famous record producer". In his career, Martin produced 30 number-one hit singles in the United Kingdom and 23 number-one hits in the United States, and won six Grammy Awards. He also held a number of senior executive roles at media companies and contributed to a wide range of charitable causes, including his work for The Prince's Trust and the Caribbean island of Montserrat. In recognition of his services to the music industry and popular culture, he was made a Knight Bachelor in 1996.

If you are a fan of music history, production, or diversity, you will love this box set. Produced by George Martin is a collection of tracks that showcase the legendary producer’s skills, vision, and versatility. From big band to rock & roll, from comedy to classical, from jazz to pop, this box set covers a wide range of genres and styles that Martin has worked with over his 50-year career. You will hear some familiar classics from the Beatles, Paul McCartney, and Elton John, as well as some lesser-known gems from artists such as Cleo Laine, Stan Getz, and Mahavishnu Orchestra. You will also get a glimpse into Martin’s personality and humor through his spoken-word and comedy productions, featuring Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan, and Beyond the Fringe. The box set also includes a book with rare photos, interviews, and commentary from Martin himself, giving you an insight into his creative process and philosophy.

The box set consists of six CDs, each with a different theme and genre.

CD1 - Crazy Rhythms, features pre-rock & roll big band, skiffle, and dance music from the 1940s and 1950s. You will enjoy the catchy tunes and lively rhythms of songs such as “Pickin’ a Chicken” by Eve Boswell, “I Got It Bad (And That Ain’t Good)” by Cleo Laine, and “High Society” by Graeme Bell.

CD2 - Transports of Delight, highlights spoken-word and comedy sides produced by Martin in the 1950s and 1960s. You will laugh at the witty sketches and hilarious performances of well-known artists such as Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan, and the Beyond the Fringe ensemble.

CD3 - That Was the Decade That Was, celebrates the 1960s rock & roll renaissance, featuring some of the most iconic songs and artists that Martin worked with. You will sing along to the timeless hits of the Beatles, Gerry & the Pacemakers, Cilla Black, and Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas.

CD4 -  Gold Fingers, showcases Martin’s classical productions, ranging from film scores to orchestral works to chamber music. You will appreciate the beauty and elegance of tracks such as “Coronation Scot” by Sidney Torch and his orchestra, “Barwick Green” by Arthur Wood, and “Theme One” by Van der Graaf Generator.

CD5 - Smiles of the Beyond, highlights jazz, pop, and fusion tracks produced by Martin in the 1970s and beyond. You will groove to the smooth sounds and innovative arrangements of artists such as Stan Getz, Jeff Beck, America, and Mahavishnu Orchestra.

CD6 - Nice Work, highlights an eclectic mix of Martin’s later productions, featuring artists such as Paul McCartney, Elton John, Kate Bush, Ultravox, and Cheap Trick.

This box set is a tribute to one of the most influential and successful record producers in the history of popular music. It is a must-have for any music lover who appreciates the art and craft of music production. Produced by George Martin is not only a collection of tracks but also a sound life of a musical genius. 1. I read once there are 2 types of Producers. One wants to make the music in their head (Phil Spector) and one that wants to make the music in the artists head. I am thankful that the Beatles found the latter in George Martin. Thanks for sharing this wonderful collection. ("Hole In The Ground" is one of my childhood memories)
