K's NORTHERN SOUL UPDATE

VA - Northern Soul: The 150 Greatest Floorshakers in the World... Ever! (Updated Improved Remastered Expanded Super Deluxe Edition) [2024] (6x CDs)

I decided to revisit my Northern Soul compilation of all-time greats and expand it to 150 of the absolute best of the best, cream of the crop Northern Soul floorfillers, the tracks that most 'soulers' would want to hear and dance to at a party or an all-nighter.

These are the songs which rate highly in virtually every Northern Soul poll online, and would be an absolute blast to play in the order I've compiled them.

I've also attempted to make it as authentic as possible by beginning with what most consider to be the greatest Northern Soul track ever released; 'Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)' by Frank Wilson, in its original 1965 7" single 45 mono recording and ending the set with the three songs that became known as the '3 before 8'.

Northern Soul is a music and dance movement that emerged in Northern England and the English Midlands in the late 1960s from the British mod scene, based on a particular style of Black American soul music, especially from the mid-1960s, with a heavy beat and fast tempo (100 bpm and above) or American soul music from northern cities such as Detroit, Chicago and others.

The northern soul movement generally eschews Motown or Motown-influenced music that has had significant mainstream commercial success. The recordings most prized by enthusiasts of the genre are usually by lesser-known artists, released only in limited numbers, often by American labels such as Vee-Jay Records, Chess Records, Brunswick Records, Ric-Tic, Gordy Records, Golden World Records (Detroit), Mirwood Records (Los Angeles), Shout Records and Okeh.

Northern Soul is associated with particular dance styles and fashions that grew out of the underground rhythm and soul scene of the late 1960s at venues such as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester. This scene and the associated dances and fashions quickly spread to other UK dancehalls and nightclubs like the Wigan Casino, Blackpool Mecca (the Highland Room), and Golden Torch (Stoke-on-Trent).

As the favoured beat became more uptempo and frantic in the early 1970s, northern soul dancing became more athletic, somewhat resembling the later dance styles of disco and break dancing. Featuring spins, flips, karate kicks and backdrops, club dancing styles were often inspired by the stage performances of touring American soul acts such as Little Anthony and the Imperials and Jackie Wilson.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, popular northern soul records generally dated from the mid-1960s. This meant that the movement was sustained (and "new" recordings added to playlists) by prominent DJs discovering rare and previously overlooked records. Later on, certain clubs and DJs began to move away from the 1960s Motown sound and began to play newer releases with a more contemporary sound.

Young people from all over the UK regularly attended Wigan Casino to hear the latest northern soul artists and to dance. There were long queues to get in. The second dance floor, Mr M's, stayed open until 6 am and played oldies songs from a variety of DJs including Dave Evison and Steve Whittle. All-nighters generally ended with three songs that became known as the '3 before 8': "Time Will Pass You By" by Tobi Legend, "Long After Tonight Is All Over" by Jimmy Radcliffe, and "I'm on My Way" by Dean Parrish.

Wigan Casino's 500th all-nighter was held on Saturday 16 May 1981, from midnight to 8 am. Over the eight years it was open, it reputedly had over one million people through its doors.

Wigan Council owned the building and wanted to extend the nearby Civic Centre, but short of funding, it never went ahead. The club closed on 6 December 1981; that final night of Wigan Casino in its Northern soul state was DJ'd by Russ Winstanley, and the '3 before 8' were played three times consecutively at the end of the night. The crowd refused to leave; according to Winstanley, to "break this spell of hysteria", he picked a 7" at random from his box and played that. This final Wigan Casino song became one of the most famous Northern soul songs of all time, Frank Wilson's "Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)".

What is the most expensive Northern Soul record ever sold?

Frank Wilson - "Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)" (SOUL*35019, US 7-inch 45 rpm in plain sleeve, 1965). One of two known copies of this Northern soul classic fetched over £100,000 in 2020, according to the Harborough Mail. Northern soul is a highly collectible area, based around obscure American soul singles.

So, after considerable and extensive online research, plus my own recollections and memories, here is my personal compilation of what I consider to be the 150 best and most important tracks from the original Northern Soul era.

Many tracks have been replaced with better sounding versions, with a fair few replacements taken from the original master tapes.

This 6CD set contains many rare and extremely hard to find tracks, with a number featured in their original mono form. All tracks are the 100% original studio recordings. No later re-recordings, remixes, 'stereo enhanced' or live versions here!

Compiled as always using the very latest and highest quality digital remasters, with a considerable number of tracks sourced from the original master tapes for superior sound quality and ready for an all-nighter dance party of a lifetime!

    1. That photograph really moves me. I also come from that background. Working in a local job frustrated at life. Getting out on the dance floor with your mates and being free for a while to just let lose. Look at their
      faces.
