Soul music (often referred to simply as Soul) is a popular music genre that originated in the African American community throughout the United States in the 1950's and early 1960's. It combines elements of African American gospel music, rhythm and blues and jazz. Soul music became popular for dancing and listening in the United States, where record labels such as Motown, Atlantic and Stax were influential during the Civil Rights Movement. Soul also became popular around the world, directly influencing rock music and the music of Africa.  According to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, soul is "music that arose out of the black experience in America through the transmutation of gospel and rhythm & blues into a form of funky, secular testifying". Catchy rhythms, stressed by hand claps and extemporaneous body moves, are an important feature of soul music. Other characteristics are a call and response between the lead vocalist and the chorus and an especially tense vocal sound. The style also occasionally uses improvisational additions, twirls and auxiliary sounds.  Soul music reflected the African American identity, and it stressed the importance of an African American culture. The new-found African American consciousness led to new styles of music, which boasted pride in being black. 

Soul music dominated the U.S. R&B chart in the 1960's, and many recordings crossed over into the pop charts in the U.S., Britain and elsewhere. By 1968, the soul music genre had begun to splinter. Some soul artists developed funk music, while other singers and groups developed slicker, more sophisticated, and in some cases more politically conscious varieties. By the early 1970s, soul music had been influenced by psychedelic rock and other genres, leading to psychedelic soul. The United States saw the development of neo soul around 1994. There are also several other sub-genres and offshoots of soul music.

The key sub-genres of soul include the Motown style, a more pop-friendly and rhythmic style; Southern Soul, characterized by its gritty-yet-fragile vocals, punching horn sections, and tight rhythms.; Memphis soul, a shimmering, sultry style; Smooth soul, characterized by melodic hooks, funk influence and smooth production style.; Country soul has its roots in Gospel, Rhythm & Blues, and Country music, emphasizing the signatures and textures of country music over the grittier and horn-driven sound of Southern Soul. The impact of soul music was manifold; internationally, white and other non-black musicians were influenced by soul music. Several terms were introduced, such as "blue-eyed soul", which is R&B or soul music performed by white artists. The meaning of "blue-eyed soul" has evolved over decades. CHICAGO SOUL is a style of soul music that arose during the 1960's in Chicago. Along with Detroit, the home of Motown, and Memphis, with its hard-edged, gritty performers (see Memphis soul), Chicago and the Chicago soul style helped spur the album-oriented soul revolution of the early 1970's. The sound of Chicago soul, like southern soul with its rich influence of black gospel music, also exhibited an unmistakable gospel sound, but was somewhat lighter and more delicate in its approach. Chicago vocal groups tended to feature laid-back sweet harmonies, while solo artists exhibited a highly melodic and somewhat pop approach to their songs. Accompaniment usually featured highly orchestrated arrangements, with horns and strings, by such notable arrangers as Johnny Pate (who largely worked with horns) and Riley Hampton (who specialized in strings). This kind of soul music is sometimes called "soft soul", to distinguish it from the harsher and gospel-like "hard soul" style.

MEMPHIS SOUL, also known as the Memphis sound, was the most prominent strain of Southern soul. It is a shimmering, sultry style produced in the 1960's and 1970's at Stax Records and Hi Records in Memphis, Tennessee, featuring melodic unison horn lines, organ, guitar, bass, and a driving beat on the drums. Many of the songs in this style were performed by vocalists backed by the house bands of Stax, Hi and Goldwax Records. The Memphis soul sound was different from the Motown sound from Detroit. After the rise of disco in the late 1970's, Memphis soul declined somewhat in popularity. The Stax Museum of American Soul Music is dedicated to preserving the Memphis sound.

NEW ORLEANS SOUL is a musical style derived from the soul music which has a large influence of the Gospel (music). New Orleans soul has ingredients of pop music and soul and is influenced by boogie-woogie style. The songs always are accompanied by a piano and a saxophone. This became known, mainly, in the postwar era, in the Crescent City. This genus stands out for its pop base (what can be seen in the structures of genus) and Rock rhythms that have become very influenced by the "second line" hits, very popular in the city. The Caribbean music and Latin music from the 60's, that earned a great importance in the city, also inspired to this genre of Soul to develop more exotic rhythms. There are also normal midtempo rhythms. The musicians give more importance to the music and sound that to the letter, which sometimes makes no sense. The choir is always feminine, with the participation of one or two women in it.

PHILADELPHIA SOUL, sometimes called Philly soul, the Philadelphia sound, Phillysound, or TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia), is a genre of late 1960's–1970's soul music characterized by funk influences and lush instrumental arrangements, often featuring sweeping strings and piercing horns. The genre laid the groundwork for disco by fusing the R&B rhythm sections of the 1960's with the pop vocal tradition and featuring a slightly more pronounced jazz influence in its melodic structures and arrangements. Fred Wesley, the trombonist of the James Brown band and Parliament-Funkadelic, described the signature deep but orchestrated sound as "putting the bow tie on funk."
