LEIBER & STOLLER

VA - The Leiber & Stoller Story Vol. 01+02+03 [2004-2007] (3 x CDs)

Lyricist Jerome Leiber (April 25, 1933 - August 22, 2011) and composer Michael Stoller (born March 13, 1933) were American songwriting and record producing partners. They found success as the writers of such crossover hit songs as "Hound Dog" (1952) and "Kansas City" (1952). Later in the 1950s, particularly through their work with the Coasters, they created a string of ground-breaking hits including "Young Blood" (1957), "Searchin'" (1957), and "Yakety Yak" (1958)—that used the humorous vernacular of teenagers sung in a style that was openly theatrical rather than personal.  Leiber and Stoller wrote hits for Elvis Presley, including "Love Me" (1956), "Jailhouse Rock" (1957), "Loving You", "Don't", and "King Creole". They also collaborated with other writers on such songs as "On Broadway", written with Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil; "Stand By Me", written with Ben E. King; "Young Blood", written with Doc Pomus; and "Spanish Harlem", co-written by Leiber and Phil Spector. They were sometimes credited under the pseudonym Elmo Glick. In 1964, they launched Red Bird Records with George Goldner and, focusing on the "girl group" sound, released some of the notable songs of the Brill Building period. In all, Leiber and Stoller wrote or co-wrote over 70 chart hits. They were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. (Wikipedia)

VA - The Leiber & Stoller Story, Vol. 01 [2004] Hard Times - The Los Angeles Years 1951-1956       The first of three Ace anthologies chronicling the songwriting achievements of arguably the two most famous names in rock n roll songwriting, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. This first volume deals with their early years as (predominantly) rhythm and blues songwriters in Los Angeles, staring with their first recorded compositions by Jimmy Witherspoon and the Robbins and ending just prior to the start of their great successes with the Coasters and Elvis Presley.

VA - The Leiber & Stoller Story, Vol. 02 [2006] On The Horizon 1956-1962          After a slight delay (the result of one or two licensing problems, now happily surmounted) Ace is delighted to be able to bring you Volume Two in their three volume salute to Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, widely regarded as the first, and quite probably the greatest of all Rock 'n'Roll songwriters (and probably the only ones to be as famous as the songs they composed).

VA - The Leiber & Stoller Story, Vol. 03 [2007] Shake 'Em Up & Let 'Em Roll 1962-1969          The final part of Ace's trilogy in tribute to Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller takes their story up to 1970 and embraces the usual mixture of established classics and terminal obscurities. As ever, our CD is complemented by a handsomely and copiously illustrated booklet and impeccable sleeve notes from Mick Patrick (with input from Mike Stoller's son, Peter). (Amazon)

  1. An amazing collection - such a great songwriting duo - they were able to bridge the gap of white and black in an era where that wasn't always possible.

  2. Just look at that list of songs! Just look at that list of artists! If you're a C.G. (Certified Geezer) as I am, or if you just wonder why those old people keep saying the old songs were so much better, you NEED this collection!
