World Party - Arkeology [2012] (5 x CD's) + World Party Albums Bonus (6 x CDs)
Very sad news - the former Waterboys member and World Party frontman, Welsh singer / songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Karl Wallinger, passed away yesterday, aged 66...
Born in Prestatyn, Denbighshire, in 1957, Wallinger was an early member of The Waterboys from their formation in 1983, and performed bass and keyboards on their biggest hit "The Whole Of The Moon" (UK #26 on original issue in 1985, and #3 when re-released in 1991)... He left The Waterboys in 1986, and formed a new three-piece band, World Party, with whom he scored four UK Top 40 hits between 1990 and 1997 (the biggest, "Is It Like Today?", topping out at #19 in 1993, as the lead single from their most successful album, their third album "Bang!" - #2 in the UK Albums Chart - released that year)...
In 1997, World Party (by this time essentially the now-40-year-old Wallinger performing as a solo act) would issue a promo-only single, the gentle ballad "She's The One", inspired by the recent death of Wallinger's mother, which appeared on the fourth World Party album "Egyptology" later that year... Initially unsuccessful, the song is now, retrospectively, perhaps his best-known work, largely as a result of a cover version by ex-Take That member Robbie Williams reaching #1 in the UK in November 1999... This caused some controversy at the time, in part due to Williams and Guy Chambers using Wallinger's backing band, without his knowledge, to perform the instruments (resulting in the two versions sounding almost identical) - and also because Williams regularly introduced his cover of the song at live concerts as "one of the best songs I've ever written", despite knowing that his version was a cover - which reportedly angered Wallinger, who was recovering from the first of two near-fatal aneurysms he suffered in his lifetime at the time Williams' cover topped the UK Charts... By 2000, this hostility had simmered down, and Wallinger received an Ivor Novello Award that year for writing the song...
A second aneurysm in 2001 left Wallinger unable to speak for some time, and also caused him to become partially sighted for the remainder of his life; however, by 2006 he had recovered enough to resume recording, performing and touring, which despite continued health issues, he continued to do intermittently until 2023...

World Party - Arkeology [2012] (5 x CD's)
World Party are a British musical group, which is essentially the solo project of its sole member, Karl Wallinger. He started the band in 1986 in London after leaving the Waterboys. Wallinger is one of the best kept secrets in the music industry. He is not amazingly prolific, but the quality of his work is great! We need more like him! This set brings together all the unreleased and obscure tracks. Fantastic Beatles covers. Karl Wallinger/World Party is one of the most underappreciated artists in the world.
Arkeology is a compilation album by World Party released on April 10, 2012. The album is composed almost entirely of previously unreleased material: 70 tracks including new songs finished as recently as 2011, plus an "unheard history of rare studio gems, live sessions, concert recordings, radio interviews, covers, demos and B-sides." Sure, there is the obvious Beatles influence including a handful of Beatles' covers, but Wallinger is quite his own man too and these songs all resonate with his distinctive musical touch.
This compilation is not simply b-sides and outtakes--it's a great snapshot of a variety of styles and feelings from the wonderfully inventive idea that is World Party. Glad to know that he didn't simply rely on his old standbys for this release, it's a treasure trove of tidbits that are a must have for any World Party fan. All performances are great and the joy of discovering this huge part of music will be continuing for a long time. This is a musical treasure chest. (Amazon)
