VA - Have a Nice Decade: The 70s Pop Culture Box [1998] (7 x CDs)
For anyone who grew up during the last days of AM radio, anyone who remembers gas shortages, disco scarves, and feathered hair, this mammoth seven-disc box set, "Have a Nice Decade: The 70s Pop Culture Box" will be a holy grail of nostalgia. First of all, the discs themselves contain a staggering 164 tracks. Basically, if you remember the song, it's probably included: from enduring chestnuts even today's teenagers can sing ("Fire and Rain," "Fly Like an Eagle") to obscure gems of kitsch like "The Night Chicago Died" and the supremely maudlin "Billy Don't Be a Hero." If you were born in the 1960s, you'll probably find this stuff enjoyable rather than embarrassing (to the degree that you can think back on your adolescence without cringing). But don't let the music distract you from the packaging, either. The box is covered in avocado-green shag carpeting (embroidered with a happy-face pattern), and the booklet contains photos of all the artists, essays on the politics and culture of the period, and capsule references to notable events, fads, and people. Only Rhino Records could have put out a reissue package of music, images, and text this perfect. (AMG review by Rick Anderson)

In my view this is a truly pivotal set. Sure there are things missing, quite a bit actually, but what's there indeed is/was all important to the soundscape of the time. The 70's were exceptionally blessed with so much melody and variation of style that we all have come to call genre, there is no way any 7-CD set can do it absolute and proper justice, but this is a great attempt to create a historical sound document, you can thank Rhino for that!
ReplyDeleteI think later versions of this did not come with the shag carpet cover but I do have an original copy and so can attest to it actually coming with an avocado-green shag carpet cover (embroidered with a happy-face pattern). Very Cool! Of course I didn't get it just for the cover, although it's true... I will habitually buy any LP that comes with a shag carpet cover... yeah, so many of those... ha!
As an aside, got me thinking about the many albums with unique cover art and/or gimmick to either make an artistic statement or more probably as a marketing ploy. Mostly LP's, even though this 70's box was a CD set. Anyway, the Rolling Stones "Sticky Fingers" album comes to mind as being uniquely problematic. It showed a pair of trousers (jeans) and came with an actual zipper embedded in the cover. If you have it, you know storing that album with others, even upright on a shelf, was a problem because that metal zipper sticking out would either scratch other album covers or cause records next to it to warp over time. Unless it's a zipped file, beware that one!

Led Zeppelin III with its rotating wheel, Physical Graffiti with it's "windows" and In through the out door that came in a paper bag.(plus it came in multiple covers reflecting the view of each person in the bar).Also a lot of albums came with posters, stickers etc and in the case of Wings at the speed of sound I've still got the diary book that came with it for 1976.

DeleteThere was an obscure folky-rock kind of guy, Ben Atkins who put out a 1971 album called Patchouli... and that's what it smelled like. The copy I had at the radio station seemed like the cardboard had been drenched in that scent and boy was it strong. You really knew when that album was around! Can't imagine what a bunch of them together in a record store would be like. The inside gatefold picture of Atkins sitting in an outhouse was appropriate, in the old days, patchouli was sometimes used there as a deodorizer. I much preferred The Raspberries 1st album that smelled like raspberries even tho it wasn't as strong since it was just a Scratch-n-Sniff sticker on the front. Great start for a great band tho, scented or not. I expected a 1973 album by a group called Sandalwood to smell like Sandalwood but it unfortunately DID NOT. Always thought that a missed marketing opportunity. Also, just imagine what they could have done with Nirvana's "Smell Like Teen Spirit"! But you don't want your album to be a "stinker"... that's for sure. Anyway, these special gimmicks cost a lot of extra company cash and it was sometimes surprising to see where it was used. Tough business, if you have a nose for it, as they say.
