An area of music I need to study more. Thanks BB (Beefheart and Zappa may be beyond my reach)
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the ride, lemonflag.
DeleteCheers.
Thank you, BB -- and delighted to see you back on the beam!
ReplyDelete@lemonflag, I hope you'll eventually or gradually give both Beefheart and Zappa the proverbial second chance. Now, just between you and me and, um, the national security apparatus, let me confess that I myself am NOT the world's biggest fan of those two artists. Yet there are certain works from each of them that I really do love.
For example, Zappa's "Watermelon In Easter Hay" (included in this collection) is one of my all-time favorite instrumentals -- indeed, one of my all-time favorite recordings, period. That piece comes from a concept album, "Joe's Garage," and the spoken word passage at the beginning might perhaps seem a bit confusing or off-putting unless encountered within the context of the actual story. Nevertheless, I for one think the rest of the track is gorgeous, and I would even say breathtakingly so.
As for the selection from Beefheart, "Ashtray Heart," I'll acknowledge that it's representative, by which I mean characteristically "difficult." Yet I'd also emphasize that the Captain's recorded output was a lot more variegated than either this track or his reputation might imply. Just for the sake of illustration, here's an alternative sample (another instrumental, as it happens) from "Doc At the Radar Station," the same album as is the source for "Ashtray Heart." This one's titled "A Carrot Is As Close As A Rabbit Gets To A Diamond:

All of the preceding is to indicate that, in my opinion at least , neither Beefheart nor Zappa should be written off as inaccessible. Both might require a bit of a stretch, sometimes rather more than that, but I honestly don't think that either of them could -- and certainly not in all instances -- be beyond your reach.
Thanks, Crab Devil.
DeleteI will leave lemonflag to comment if he wants but I do agree with your final assessment that both might require a bit of a stretch, sometimes rather more than that, but I honestly don't think that either of them could be beyond anyone's reach.
Cheers.
Crab Devil thank you for your detailed response to my comment. I gave both tunes a listen. After wishing Frank would shut up the music was nice. I gave it the entire 9 plus minutes. I thought a was on hold at the doctors office. The music went nowhere, sorry.
DeleteBeefheart is still a no go. That voice beat the punks by decades! The Carrot tune was nice, but again it did not grab me.
I have always enjoyed Peaches En Regalia but I fear I am too old for new discoveries. I'm an old sixties jingle jangle stuck in the mud.
BB good to see you back up to speed. Take care and keep doing what you enjoy.
