The Good Rats are an American rock band from Long Island, New York, known for their unique blend of rock, blues, and pop. They were formed in 1964 by five students from St. John’s University: Ted Haenlein, Frank Stapleton, Eric Crane, Denny Ryan, and Peppi Marchello. Initially called the U-Men, they played gigs in the Rockaways and Long Island.

In 1966, a record company executive heard them play and signed the band, suggesting a name change to the Good Rats. The band continued to play top 40 covers while working on their original music. By 1968, the band’s composition had changed, with Peppi’s brother Micky and Art Fahie (aka/ Crazy Artie) joining the band. In 1969, they released their first album, the self-titled “The Good Rats” which gained cult popularity among New Yorkers. The band continued to build a following, playing Long Island’s thriving club scene.

By 1972, the lineup changed again, with guitarist John “The Cat” Gatto, bass player Lenny Kotke, and drummer Joe Franco joining the Marchello brothers. In 1974, they released their most popular album, “Tasty”, featuring a blend of hard and progressive rock with subtle jazz influences.

The Good Rats have performed at venues such as Madison Square Garden, The Philadelphia Spectrum, The Nassau Coliseum, and The Hammersmith Odeon in England. They have also opened for artists like Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith, The Ramones, Ozzy Osbourne, The Grateful Dead, Kiss, and Journey.

Despite their success, they are often referred to as "the world’s most famous unknown band". They have a dedicated fan base, including celebrities like Alec Baldwin, Rosie O’Donnel, and many others. The band was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame, a testament to their enduring influence.

The Good Rats have carved a unique niche in the music scene with their eclectic blend of rock, blues, and pop. Their music, as reflected in their albums, is a testament to their innovative spirit and musical versatility. Their journey began with their self-titled debut album in 1969, which quickly gained a cult following among New Yorkers. The album was a showcase of their innovative approach to music, with memorable tracks that resonated with their audience.  The band’s musical prowess was further demonstrated in their 1974 release, “Tasty”.
