This compilation, while titled “Best of Perception & Today Records,” offers a unique perspective rather than a definitive overview of these two influential New York labels from the ‘70s. The selection of tracks is thoughtfully curated and presents an alternative, equally enjoyable version of the labels’ history. Perception and Today might have been less mainstream compared to major labels, but they had their moments of glory. They introduced us to talents like Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Johnny Hartman, Bobby Rydell, Astrud Gilberto, and the prodigious Lucky Peterson. Their chart successes were modest but meaningful. For instance, the Fatback Band’s first charting singles were on Perception, and Black Ivory, guided by the young and talented Patrick Adams, had five singles on the charts. The compilation includes a variety of artists, each contributing their unique flavor to the mix. From the family group Eight Minutes to the soulful J.J. Barnes, from the versatile Johnny Pate to the powerful spoken word artist Wanda Robinson, there’s something for everyone. So, while it might not have the biggest hits, this compilation certainly captures the spirit and diversity of Perception and Today Records. In fact, this compilation provides us a view of Manhattan’s black music scene of the period, from the established greats to the fresh young things who would make their mark in the coming years. This compilation is a testament to the rich musical history of Perception & Today Records, showcasing the labels’ commitment to pushing the boundaries of Jazz, Soul, Funk, and Latin music. Enjoy the journey! (B)
