VA - The British Pop Invasion 1964-1967: A 60th Anniversary Celebration (Updated Improved Remastered Expanded Super Deluxe Edition) [2024] (12 x CDs)
In celebration of 60 years since The Beatles kicked off the British Invasion of 1964 in the US, here is my updated, improved, remastered, expanded Super Deluxe Edition of a previous set.
On February 7, 1964, the Beatles arrived in New York for their inaugural U.S. visit, and two days later played on The Ed Sullivan Show to hysterical response and record viewership, thereby effecting a cataclysmic cultural shift and triggering a musical movement that would come to be known as the British Invasion.
The Beatles made several appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show, including three in February 1964 that were among their first appearances in front of an American audience. Their first appearance, on February 9, was seen by over 73 million viewers and came to be regarded as a cultural watershed that launched American Beatlemania - as well as the wider British Invasion of American pop music - and inspired many young viewers to become rock musicians. The band also made another appearance during their 1965 U.S. tour.
CBS saw huge anticipation for the Beatles' first appearance, with 50,000 ticket requests for the 728-seat Studio 50 (now known as the Ed Sullivan Theater) where the band was to perform, far surpassing the 7,000 requested for Elvis Presley's 1957 debut. Among those in attendance were Richard Nixon's daughters, Julie and Tricia, who had been invited by NBC host Jack Paar's daughter, Randy. Backstage before the show, freshly minted Olympic gold-medal speed skater Terry McDermott, a part-time barber, posed for photographs with the band in which he pretended to cut Paul McCartney's hair as the other band members and Sullivan looked on with mock horror.
Sullivan began the show by telling the audience that Elvis Presley and his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, had sent the Beatles a telegram wishing them success in America (though it was reported later that Parker sent the telegram without Presley's knowledge).
Sullivan then introduced the Beatles, who opened by performing "All My Loving"; "Till There Was You", which featured the names of the group members superimposed on closeup shots, including the famous "SORRY GIRLS, HE'S MARRIED" caption on John Lennon; and "She Loves You". The act that followed the Beatles in the broadcast, magician Fred Kaps, was pre-recorded in order to allow time for an elaborate set change.
The group returned later in the program to perform "I Saw Her Standing There" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand".
The appearance on February 9 is considered a milestone in American pop culture, and furthermore the beginning of the British Invasion in music. The broadcast drew more than 73 million viewers, a record for U.S. television at the time (broken three years later by the series finale of The Fugitive). The broadcast drew a rating of 45.3 and a 60 share, and was Sullivan's first time in seven years that he topped the nightly ratings. A typical Sullivan broadcast at the time drew about 21 million viewers.

"She Loves You" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles, written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and released as a single in the United Kingdom on 23 August 1963. The single set and surpassed several sales records in the United Kingdom charts, and set a record in the United States as one of the five Beatles songs that held the top five positions in the charts simultaneously, on 4 April 1964. It remains the band's best-selling single in the UK and was the top-selling single of the 1960s there by any artist.
In November 2004, Rolling Stone ranked "She Loves You" number 64 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In August 2009, at the end of its "Beatles Weekend", BBC Radio 2 announced that "She Loves You" was the Beatles' all-time best-selling single in the UK based on information compiled by the Official Charts Company.
"I Want to Hold Your Hand" climbed to No. 1 by the end of January 1964, launching the "British Invasion" of the American music scene and paving the way for more Beatles records and releases by other British artists. In the wake of that success, "She Loves You" single re-emerged, and entered the Billboard chart on 25 January 1964.
Beatlemania took hold of America, spurred by the group's appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show in February, where they performed this among other songs. "She Loves You" spent four weeks at No. 2, behind "I Want to Hold Your Hand", then replaced it for two weeks at No. 1 beginning on 21 March.
The Beatles are one of only two artists ever whose first two Hot 100 singles held the top two positions simultaneously on that chart. During its fifteen-week run on the American charts, "She Loves You" was joined by four other Beatles songs at the top five in the American charts and became part of the group setting several all-time records for the Hot 100. Billboard ranked the record as the No. 2 song of 1964, behind "I Want to Hold Your Hand", making the Beatles the second act to hold the top two year-end record positions since Elvis Presley did it in 1956 with "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Don't Be Cruel".
The British Invasion was a cultural phenomenon of the mid-1960s, when rock and pop music acts from the United Kingdom and other aspects of British culture became popular in the United States and significant to the rising "counterculture" on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
Pop and rock groups such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Zombies, the Kinks, Small Faces, the Dave Clark Five, Herman's Hermits, the Hollies, the Animals, Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Searchers, the Yardbirds, the Who, and Them, as well as solo singers like Dusty Springfield, Cilla Black, Petula Clark, Tom Jones, and Donovan, were at the forefront of the "invasion".
American popular music experienced a seismic shift in 1964. That year, British bands launched what became commonly known as an “invasion” of the American pop charts and culture. Led by The Beatles and other British bands and artists, completely and dramatically affected the course of rock & roll in America. At no other time in the 20th century had American popular music been so jolted by foreign sounds and influences.
What many young Americans in 1964 didn’t realize was that these “new” sounds coming from across the Atlantic weren’t new at all. Many of the British Invasion bands and artists claimed America and its remarkably rich pop music tradition as their primary influence. What made the re-invention of American music by the British acts, so alluring was the fresh and innovative ways they interpreted it and then the manner by which they made it their own. Coupled with intriguing accents, radically new fashion ideas and hairstyles, and a genuine artistic excellence, the British Invasion ignited a music renaissance in America and permanently and prominently established the U.K. on the rock & roll map.
The emergence of a relatively homogeneous worldwide "rock" music style marking the end of the "invasion" occurred in 1967.
No officially released compilation has ever done this amazing run of 4 years (1964-1967) justice, due to many key tracks being omitted,
particularly by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Dave Clark Five, The Animals, The Kinks and others due to licensing restrictions, music rights issues, etc.
A number of singles released in the UK in 1962 & 1963 didn't make the US charts until 1964 following The Beatles legendary appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964.
I felt it was about time a fully comprehensive British Invasion collection was put together, featuring many of the great songs that made such a huge impact on the American charts.
This newly updated, fully packed 346 track 12CD set contains a number of rare and extremely hard to find tracks, with many featured in their original 7" mono 45 single form. ALL 100% original 1960s studio recordings - NO later re-recordings, live 'in concert' or later remixes here!
Includes the super rare US 7" single version of The Who's 'Substitute' which contains altered lyrics for US radio airplay, plus The Animals' 'We Gotta Get Out of This Place' again with altered lyrics for the US market, plus many other single mixes which are different to the album versions.
This surely has to be the most comprehensive collection from that magical four-year period ever compiled, mainly because it includes ALL the key tracks which have been omitted from previous compilations over the years.
Over 15 hours of British 60s Pop to enjoy!

Although I have all these (with maybe a dozen exceptions) it's still a mammoth effort to have in one place - so thank you K & BB.
ReplyDeleteThe music on this post seems appropriate to mark the passing of veteran D.J. Bob Rogers (at 97). Although probably unknown outside Australia he was "embedded" with The Beatles when they toured here in '64 and has many stories to tell of his time with them.
ReplyDeleteA real rejuvenation for me, Superb compilations! Thank you very much K & BB!
ReplyDeleteMagnificent. K & BB, love your work & your shares
ReplyDeleteThat's a humdinger of a collection, pretty much an 'everything you need to know about the sixties' brilliant,BB I salute you sir!
ReplyDeleteOh, and K of course, sorry got carried away huge THANKS K 🙂
DeleteThe Motherlode. There are simply no words to describe this collection, so I won't even try. A massive thankyou as ever to the masterful K and a big up to everyone's favourite host, the inimitable Butterboy. Huge hats off to you fine, fine folk.
ReplyDeleteAmazing undertaking. Many thanks, BB!
ReplyDeleteMany thanks to you and K for an outstanding expanded edition!
ReplyDeleteThe first edition of this project from 2020 was already extensive and well compiled, but this updated version with almost three times the scope puts everything so far in the shade. Overwhelming and yes, "most comprehensive", Master K! Many thanks & Best, TC
ReplyDeleteI have a 12 CD self made compilation featuring 228 songs. With a minimum of repeated artists. It took me over six months to compile. 228 songs, 11:03:56 total time.
ReplyDeleteHi Bud_e_luv_bomb.
DeleteIt would be great if you would share your compilation with us.
Just send a link here or to my email @ BUTTER2020ap@proton.me
Cheers.
Thanks, BB! This was my youth and you never get over the music of your youth!
ReplyDeleteAlso, don't know if you heard - John Lennon's 12-string acoustic guitar, the one he played You've Got to Hide Your Love Away on, was just sold for $2.3 million. The most ever for a Beatles-related instrument.
ReplyDeleteOops - $2.9 million.
ReplyDeleteI am so grateful to have been young when this music was around. In 1966 I was 15, these songs were everywhere. You lived and breathed them. They have never gone away and never diminished. Thank you K for caring about this music.
ReplyDeleteHi BB
Thanks a lot Butter
ReplyDeleteThanks for this BB & K, another superb offering.
ReplyDeleteThank you Butterboy and K!
