Step into the world of the unsung heroes of 20th-century black music - the mighty blues shouters. These vocal powerhouses ruled the US nightclub stages and R&B charts post-World War II, only to be overshadowed by the vibrant rock ’n’ roll wave in the early 1950s. Yet, their influence remained strong, and many stars were given a chance to revive their waning recording careers during rock ’n’ roll’s golden era – a period we fondly call their “Last Shout”. This collection aims to shine a light on the twilight of this proud musical genre, bringing back to life the final releases from some of R&B’s greatest voices. This extensive 97-track 3CD collection, showcases the finest in bellowing, yelling, and caterwauling, all compiled and annotated by R&B expert Dave Penny.

The blues boom of the 1960s, driven by white Europeans’ love for rural country blues and urban down-home blues, along with black America’s shift towards gospel-infused soul and funk, led to the fading of the jump blues shouter. This exciting musical form was almost forgotten until it was rediscovered decades later. The Last Shout! brings together both famous and lesser-known singers, offering the best of the final commercial recordings made for the African American R&B market. When their commercial appeal faded, some, like Joe Turner and Jimmy Witherspoon, found success on the jazz circuit, while others ventured into comedy, preaching, composing, or acting. Some remained tragically committed to save their flagging recording careers during rock n roll s heyday, their Last Shout, struggling to keep up with dwindling tours on the chittlin’ circuit, and sadly, some succumbed to their struggles. This collection from Fantastic Voyage captures a unique moment in black music history, when the timeless power of the classic blues shouters met the pulsating rhythms of the rock ’n’ roll era, creating truly special music."
