THE OUTER LIMITS
Dominic Frontiere – The Outer Limits (Original Television Soundtrack) [2008] (3 x CDs)
Finally, the thrilling and atmospheric compositions by Dominic Frontiere for the first season of the iconic SciFi anthology series “The Outer Limits” have been made available! and is a Limited Edition of 3,000 units.
Although Crescendo had previously released “The Outer Limits: Original Television Soundtrack,” this NEW three-CD set from La-La Land Records surpasses it in every aspect. The Crescendo release included scores from only three episodes (“The Man Who Was Never Born,” “The Hundred Days of the Dragon,” and “Nightmare”). In contrast, this La-La Land release, which spans over three hours, features scores for those three episodes plus six additional ones (“The Architects of Fear,” “Controlled Experiment,” “Tourist Attraction,” “Don’t Open Till Doomsday,” “The Mice,” and “The Human Factor”) and select pieces from “ZZZZZ” and “The Borderland.” Additionally, it features the main and end themes of the first season (with all their variations) and all the variations of the Control Voice narration. This CD set focuses solely on music from the first season because Dominic Frontiere was replaced by Harry Lubin as the composer for the second season. While some fans may prefer the first season’s scores, this release is a comprehensive compilation of Frontiere’s work for “The Outer Limits,” with a few pieces composed by Robert Van Eps.
The three-CD set is organized as follows:
CD1 - Opens with the The Control Voice - long version and the Outer Limits main title version #1. This disc includes the scores for “The Architects of Fear,” “Controlled Experiment,” and “Tourist Attraction,” along with extended versions of the main and end titles and Vic Perrin’s Control Voice narration. While the score for “The Architects of Fear” may not be as SciFi-esque as some might hope, “Controlled Experiment” more than compensates with its dreamy, atmospheric, and distinctly SciFi sound. “Tourist Attraction,” primarily composed by Robert Van Eps, adds a Latin American flair to the collection. CD1 concludeds with the Outer Limits end credits, long version in stereo.
CD2 - Opens with the The Control Voice - short version and the Outer Limits main title version #1. This disc features the scores for “Nightmare,” “Don’t Open Till Doomsday,” and “The Man Who Was Never Born,” as well as the second revisions of the main and end themes and the Control Voice. “Nightmare” stands out as the best score of the album, with its haunting and beautiful composition. “Don’t Open Till Doomsday” follows with a chilling and ominous feel, while “The Man Who Was Never Born” offers a romantic and dreamy score. CD2 concludeds with the Outer Limits end credits, version #2.
CD3 - Opens with the Outer Limits main title version #3. The final disc includes the scores for “The Hundred Days of the Dragon,” “The Mice,” and “The Human Factor,” along with select pieces from “ZZZZZ” and “The Borderland,” the third revision of the end theme, and the Control Voice/closing narration music. “The Hundred Days of the Dragon” features a simple, repeating melody, while “The Mice” uses a revised version of the “Nightmare” score. “The Human Factor” delivers a sinister and action-packed score, and the pieces from “ZZZZZ” and “The Borderland” add unique elements to the collection. CD3 concludeds with the Outer Limits end credits, version #3.
The La-La Land Records release of “The Outer Limits” soundtrack, remastered by James Nelson, has been highly praised for its sound quality. Many reviewers have noted that it surpasses the Crescendo set, which was mastered by Bernie Grundman. The La-La Land set is described as having a richly rewarding sound, with a mastering job that is both subtle and effective, almost belying the 45-year time span of the original recordings. (B)

Thanks BB - I remember as a kid being equally scared/captivated by this show particularly the episode "The zanti misfits" (for obvious reasons). . . . We control the vertical. . . .
ReplyDeleteHi Dr Robert.
DeleteMe too.
The music on this set is sublime.
Cheers.
Hi BB! I knew Dominic Frontiere a long time ago through his soundtrack for the television series The Invaders, which was very well known in France and is still the subject of a small cult. It is very difficult to obtain the works of this composer, who is unfortunately too little known. The outer limits ("Au-delà du réel" in French) was also successful with us. Thank you for this box set, it’s really an opportunity to dive back into his work.
ReplyDeleteHi Herve.
DeleteI remember The Invaders TV show. I wasn't around for many years but to a teenager the themes of science fiction were great. I am delighted this set has bought back fond memories for you.
Cheers.
