PSYCHEDELIC UNKNOWNS

VA - Billy Presents the Psychedelic Unknowns Vol. 01 - Vol. 11 [1978-1999] (10 x CDs)

Billy Synth, also known as Bill Stump, is a notable figure in the world of underground music, particularly known for his contributions to the punk and new wave scenes. As a musician, record collector, and compiler, Billy Synth has a deep passion for unearthing rare and obscure tracks. His dedication to preserving and promoting lesser-known music is evident in his compilation series “Billy Presents The Psychedelic Unknowns.”

The “Billy Presents the Psychedelic Unknowns” series is a wonderful collection that delves deep into the obscure and often overlooked corners of the psychedelic and garage rock genres from the 1960s.  Compiled by Billy Synth, this series is a testament to the transformative power of music and its ability to capture the essence of an era. The series was released on various labels, primarily Calico Records and Scrap Records but also appeared on theSyn-Sity, Starglow-Neon, Dayglow-Freon labels.

You will note that Volume 10 is does not exist for some strange reason. The series jumps from Vol. 09  to Vol. 11. The absence of Volume 10 in the “Billy Presents The Psychedelic Unknowns” series is a bit of a mystery and has intrigued collectors and enthusiasts for years. There are a few theories and explanations that have circulated within the music community.  One theory suggests that Volume 10 was planned but never released due to various logistical or personal reasons on the part of Billy Synth. Compiling and releasing these volumes required significant effort, and it’s possible that circumstances prevented the completion of this particular volume.

Another explanation is that the series was intentionally numbered to create a sense of intrigue and exclusivity. By skipping Volume 10, Billy Synth may have aimed to add an element of mystique to the series, making it even more appealing to collectors who thrive on the rarity and uniqueness of such compilations. Additionally, some sources indicate that there were unofficial releases and imposters who attempted to continue the series without Billy Synth’s involvement. This could have led to confusion and the eventual omission of Volume 10 from the official lineup.

Regardless of the reason, the missing Volume 10 has become a part of the series’ lore, adding to its allure and the fascination it holds for fans of obscure psychedelic and garage rock music.

The music in this series is characterized by its raw, unpolished sound, which stands in stark contrast to the more polished and commercial tracks of the time. This rawness gives the music an authenticity that resonates deeply with listeners, transporting them back to a time when experimentation and innovation were at the forefront of the music scene. The tracks are filled with swirling guitars, haunting vocals, and mind-bending effects that create a sense of otherworldliness, inviting listeners to embark on a journey of sonic exploration.

One of the most significant aspects of this series is its ability to evoke a sense of nostalgia and longing for a bygone era. For many listeners, these tracks serve as a reminder of the rebellious spirit and countercultural movements that defined the 1960s. The music captures the essence of a time when boundaries were being pushed, and societal norms were being challenged. This sense of rebellion and experimentation is palpable in every note, making the series a powerful reminder of the transformative power of music.

Moreover, the series has had a profound influence on contemporary music and culture. By unearthing these hidden gems, Billy Synth has provided a valuable resource for musicians and enthusiasts alike, inspiring a new generation of artists to explore the depths of psychedelic and garage rock. The series has also played a crucial role in preserving the legacy of these obscure tracks, ensuring that they are not lost to history.

In conclusion, “Billy Presents the Psychedelic Unknowns” is more than just a collection of rare tracks; it is a celebration of the spirit of the 1960s and a testament to the enduring power of music to inspire, challenge, and transform. (B)

  5. Thank you so much for all the great 60s garage comps! Any chance you can do the Electric Sugarcube Flashback series? Also, any chance of Ken Nordines radio shows? I ordered a bunch of his cassettes about 30 years ago and the guy on the phone sounded just like Ken, so I thought it was an obsessed music fan, but it was actually Ken Nordine! Also, there is supposed to be a bunch or recordings of Henry Jacobs radio shows who did the Shorty Petterstein LP. There is probably a goldmine of beatnik era cool stuff on those tapes. The story is that some musicain rented his old house and found the tapes. Thanks for all the digging for gold that you do!

    1. Hi Unknown.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m thrilled to hear that you’re enjoying the 60s garage compilations.
I’m excited to confirm that the Electric Sugarcube Flashback series will be appearing soon! As for Ken Nordine’s radio shows, I’ll definitely look into that. What an amazing story about ordering his cassettes and actually speaking with him – that’s a memory to treasure!
It’s always a pleasure to uncover these hidden gems.
Keep an eye out for more musical treasures... coming soon.
      Cheers

  6. Rate Your Music (and you) says that Vol.10 was never issued, and yet I have a copy. Whether it's genuine or someone compiled it from the supplied track listing I know not. I can't find the art for it. Please excuse the late comment as I haven't visited for a while. I tried uploading to Krakenfiles but Norton terminated the connection. https://www.swisstransfer.com/d/834b639b-1ae9-4bc3-b6ef-14ef1ababfcc

    1. Hi BigGray.
Thank you for sharing Volume 10! I couldn’t find a track list anywhere that confirms this is the elusive missing volume 10. It seems likely that it might have been compiled by someone else. Interestingly, other sites like Psycharella also raise questions about the missing volume 10.
If this indeed turns out to be the lost volume 10, it’s an incredible find. I listened to your Volume 10, and it fits perfectly. I’ll add it to the blog at some stage and see what feedback we get.
Thanks for this fantastic discovery, BigGray! Truly appreciated.
      Cheers.

    3. Thanks, BigGray
So, Volume 10 was planned but never released and Billy Synth was in the process of selecting tracks for this volume, but it never saw the light of day. And these tracks are taken from a cassette.
I wonder where you obtained the Volume 10 from. Nonetheless, an absolutely great share on your part.
      Cheers.

    4. I just checked the download date on my files, 1 September 2024. Unfortunately, I have no idea where I downloaded the album from. My best guess is either the Phrock Blog chat box, or possibly the Old Melodies Chat Box. Posts stay current on Old Melodies for two or three days and at Phrock for four weeks so, after ten weeks, there's no way of confirming this or discovering the identity of the person who posted and the provenance of the files.
