VA - The Collection: Disco, The Ultimate Disco Anthems [2017] (3 x CDs)
This set is a 3CD UK compilation issued by Rhino Records as part of their “The Collection” series. With 54 tracks spanning funk, soul, and disco’s crossover peak, it’s a well-mastered, radio-friendly set that favors atmosphere and accessibility over deep crate-digging. The release is housed in a standard jewel case, with minimal liner notes and clean sequencing across all three discs.
CD1 opens with The Trammps’ “Disco Inferno”, followed by Chic’s “Good Times”, Hot Chocolate’s “You Sexy Thing”, and Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman” a confident run of dancefloor staples. But it also dips into deeper grooves: Larry Graham’s “Sooner or Later”, Slave’s “Just A Touch Of Love”, and Patrice Rushen’s “Look Up” bring jazz-funk sophistication, while Ben E. King’s “Supernatural Thing, Pt. 1”, Aquarian Dream’s “Fantasy”, and Herbie Mann’s “Hi-Jack” add cosmic textures. The inclusion of Frankie Valli’s “December, 1963 (Oh What A Night)” adds a pop-soul crossover moment.
CD2 shifts toward vocal soul and rhythmic funk. KC & The Sunshine Band, Sister Sledge, and George Benson anchor the disc with polished grooves, while Mass Production, Stargard, and T-Connection offer deeper rhythmic cuts. Norma Jean Wright’s “Sorcerer”, Narada Michael Walden’s “I Shoulda Loved You”, and Bette Midler’s “My Knight in Black Leather” bring theatrical flair and emotional range.
CD3 closes with post-disco polish and electro-funk edge. Candi Staton’s “Young Hearts Run Free”, Patrice Rushen’s “Forget Me Nots”, and Rose Royce’s “Is It Love You’re After” set the tone. Dr. John, Eumir Deodato, and Donald Byrd add jazz-funk depth, while Trussel’s “Love Injection” and Phreek’s “Weekend” deliver club-ready grooves. The sequencing favors mood and flow, ending with Ben E. King’s “Supernatural Thing, Pt. 2”a subtle callback to CD1.
This set isn’t built for rarity hunters, but it’s a clean, cohesive overview of disco’s emotional and rhythmic breadth, ideal for genre newcomers and archivists seeking polished versions of key tracks. (B)

Thank you for the two Disco Anthems collections Butterboy.
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure, Done4it.
DeleteCheers.
Thanks BB - wasn't really into disco (although my view has softened over the years) but going to one was certainly a way to meet girls!
ReplyDeleteGlad you softened on disco, Dr Robert.
DeleteIt had a way of sneaking into everyone’s story, whether through the grooves or the dancefloor moments.
Cheers.
Disco, that is one of the love/hate things of my childhood. Thanky you.
ReplyDeleteYou can see you did not compile these and the previous post. Too many songs double and the question remains
When is a disco anthems box not a disco anthems box? When you don't have Donna Summer or Sylvester in.
And you don't have to go obscure to name a dozen others. You show us,the shortcomings of such boxes by labels who have a smooth talk and are as biased as a second hand car salesman
That’s a fair call, Richard.
DeleteMissing Donna Summer and Sylvester does leave a noticeable gap, especially when the box claims to be definitive. But I also think disco was never just about the hits or the headline artists. It was about the vibe, that communal pulse, the shared joy, the way a groove could bring strangers together under mirrored lights.
Even the lesser-known tracks had a role in that atmosphere, shaping the mood and keeping the floor alive. These compilations might not hit every mark, but they still offer that feeling.
Always appreciate your sharp eye and honest take.
Cheers.
thank you as always B.B
