BRITPOP
VA - All You Good Good People (Britpop And Beyond 1995 - 1999) (4 x CDs)
Britpop’s mid‑nineties surge was more than a chart moment; it was a collision of voices, attitudes and ideas that reshaped British guitar music. All You Good Good People captures that world in motion, gathering tracks that show how the era moved from sharp indie confidence to a broader, more exploratory sound. The compilation begins with the immediacy that defined the period: bright guitars, quick tempos, and lyrics rooted in everyday life. Bands like Elastica, Ash, Sleeper, The Bluetones and Gene brought a sense of urgency, turning small observations into big choruses. Even the quieter songs carried momentum, shaped by musicians who understood how to make intimacy feel electric.
As the set unfolds, the music grows wider and more ambitious. Supergrass, Cast, Ocean Colour Scene and Shed Seven deliver polished, muscular arrangements that still retain the spirit of small venues and late‑night radio. Electronic, Lush, Catatonia and Longpigs add texture, showing how Britpop absorbed influences from dance, shoegaze and alternative pop without losing its melodic core.
Later selections reveal the era’s expansion beyond its own label. Lightning Seeds, Stereophonics, Primal Scream, Cornershop, Terry Hall and James blur the boundaries between indie, pop, art‑rock and groove‑driven experimentation. The mood shifts toward reflection, deeper production and broader emotional range. By the time Embrace, Gomez, Rialto, Puressence, Idlewild, Ultrasound, The Delgados and Doves appear, the sound has evolved into something darker, more atmospheric, and quietly ambitious, the beginning of post‑Britpop’s rise.
What makes All You Good Good People compelling is its sweep. It doesn’t freeze Britpop in its most obvious poses; it shows the movement’s full arc, from swagger to subtlety, from immediacy to introspection. For collectors, it’s a panoramic view of a scene that shaped a generation. For listeners, it’s a reminder that Britpop was never just attitude, it was melody, imagination and the thrill of hearing new voices find their place. (B)

You are special people! Thank you very much!
ReplyDeleteHi Barbus8,
DeleteThank you for the kind words. This era really was something special, full of energy, invention and a whole lot of great memories. I’m glad the collection speaks to you.
Cheers.
Lovely collection, a great era in the UK for gigs , we used to do 4 or 5 gigs a week! in the 90s, some hidden gems on this 4 cd collection, thanks for uploading
ReplyDeleteHi Moderator,
DeleteThat sounds like an incredible stretch of years, our or five gigs a week is the kind of immersion that makes an era unforgettable. The 90s really were a golden time for live music in the UK, with big names, tiny rooms, and all those bands finding their feet in real time.
There are definitely a few hidden gems tucked in among the familiar favourites, and it’s great to know they still hit the spot.
Cheers.
This has a lot of good stuff. Plus some songs I don't know but look forward to hearing. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteHi N8Deepbc,
DeleteGreat to hear, that mix of familiar favourites and new discoveries is exactly what makes a set like this fun to dive into. There’s a lot of good material from the era, and the lesser‑known tracks often end up being the ones that stick. Hope the new finds offer a rewarding listen.
Cheers.
Amazing that Paul Weller is in there. He didn't lose his mojo!
ReplyDeleteHi BG,
DeletePaul Weller's appearance really highlights just how durable his songwriting and musical instincts have been. A lot of artists from his generation went through peaks and valleys, but Weller seemed to keep evolving while still sounding unmistakably like himself. Whether it was The Jam, The Style Council, or his solo work, he always manages to stay relevant without chasing trends. His inclusion felt completely natural alongside the other artists in the set.
Cheers.
