Otis Spann & Lightnin' Hopkins - The Complete Candid Otis Spann/Lightnin' Hopkins Sessions [1992] (3 x CDs)
This 1992 Limited Edition released by Mosaic, gathers the complete Candid sessions recorded in 1960–61. The Complete Candid Otis Spann & Lightnin’ Hopkins Sessions brings together two towering blues figures at a moment when the early‑60s folk‑blues revival was just beginning to take shape. Originally recorded for Candid Records in 1960 and 1961, these sessions were produced by Nat Hentoff, whose documentary approach captured artists with minimal interference and maximum honesty. The 1992 release gathers the full body of their Candid work into one set, restoring the clarity, sequencing, and context that earlier reissues often scattered.
Otis Spann’s material is the beating heart of the collection. Best known as Muddy Waters’ pianist, Spann steps out front here with a confidence that shows why so many musicians considered him the finest blues pianist of his generation. His playing is fluid, rolling, and deeply rhythmic, and his vocals carry a warmth that balances grit with grace. These sessions reveal Spann not just as a sideman, but as a fully formed artist with his own voice and emotional range.
Lightnin’ Hopkins brings a different energy entirely. His Candid recordings are intimate, conversational, and full of that loose, behind‑the‑beat phrasing that made him so distinctive. Hopkins could turn a simple line into a story, and a story into a moment of lived experience. The stripped‑back production suits him perfectly, just voice, guitar, and the sense that he’s playing in the room with you.
What makes this set so compelling is the contrast. Spann’s Chicago‑rooted piano blues and Hopkins’ Texas storytelling sit side by side without competing, each illuminating a different branch of the tradition. Together, they form a snapshot of blues at a crossroads, one foot in the past, one stepping into a new era of rediscovery and documentation. It’s a set that honours both artists by letting them speak plainly, powerfully, and on their own terms. (B)

Thanks for this BB. Po' Lightnin' is one of my all time faves. But I think you have D1 and D3 mixed up, Hopkins disc is D3 not D1
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, RichardR.
DeleteThis is the set I have.

You are correct. The CD3 should be the Lightnin' set. I'll fix that a little later.
Cheers.
And I thought I was the only one with a copy of this. Otis Spann is the best blues piano player IMHO!
ReplyDeleteHi Joe Pfeiffer.
DeleteGreat to know you’ve been carrying a copy of this one too. Spann really was something else, that touch, that drive, always lifting the whole room. A pleasure to share a clean set of these sessions.
Cheers.
No one spanked the piano harder or better!

Mosaic goes blues! As Memphis Minnie and Lightnin' Hopkins are amongst my favorite blues artists, this is a very nice surprise indeed. And sure Otis Spann's a wonderful discovery. Bravo BB, and thank you once again for another treasure trove.
ReplyDeleteHi Ja‑Mike.
DeleteMosaic stepping into the blues is always a treat, and with Memphis Minnie and Lightnin’ in the mix it really does feel like opening a door to another room entirely.
