You can feel the transitions, not just in sound, but in sensibility, each year marking a tectonic shift in what music meant to its listeners and creators.
The early volumes, starting with 1965’s “The Year the Sixties Ignited,” are like stepping into a world on the edge of combustion. You hear it in the crackle of garage rock, the bite of early soul, the tremble of proto-psychedelia, all brimming with urgency, rebellion, and a kind of romantic defiance. By 1966 and 1967, the flames are roaring. Pop culture doesn’t just expand, it divides, mutates, and begins to mirror the turmoil brewing outside record shops and clubs.
