VA - Disco Discharge, Disco Exotica [2012] (2 x CDs)

Disco Exotica is one of the most distinctive entries in the Disco Discharge series, a run of compilations curated with an archivist’s ear and a DJ’s instinct for mood. Released in 2012 by Harmless Records, this volume leans into the stranger, more theatrical corners of late‑70s and early‑80s disco, the tracks that blurred the line between dancefloor fantasy, camp excess, and widescreen studio imagination. It’s a set built on atmosphere as much as rhythm, and that’s what gives it its charm.

The selections move confidently through a world where disco producers were pushing beyond the club and into something more cinematic. You hear tropical motifs, pseudo‑Eastern flourishes, lush strings, and the kind of playful storytelling that defined the genre’s more adventurous side. These weren’t chart‑chasing singles; they were studio creations designed to transport dancers somewhere else entirely. The sequencing captures that sense of escape, shifting from sultry slow‑burners to full‑bodied orchestral climaxes without losing the thread.

What stands out is how well the rarities sit alongside the cult favourites. Harmless had access to deep catalogues, and the curators used that freedom to highlight tracks that rarely surface outside specialist circles. The mastering is clean and respectful, keeping the warmth of the original 12‑inch mixes while giving them enough clarity to breathe in a modern context.

As a listening experience, Disco Exotica celebrates the theatrical heart of disco, the part of the genre that embraced fantasy, colour, and a touch of the surreal. It’s a reminder that disco wasn’t only about the beat; it was about world‑building, mood, and the joy of stepping into a different reality for a few minutes at a time. This set captures that spirit beautifully. (B)

  2. You must be reading my mind. I was just looking at the Disco Discharge series and wondering if you knew anyone that had all of them... Glad to get this one and now I don't need to ask you separately.

  3. Wow, what a compilation, when in doubt, add The Chaplin Band - Il Veleiro a great remake of a great Battisti song.
Disco (and House/Tekno) are rightfully sneered down for over and mass production, but are also wrongfully downed despite all the (monu)mental musical classics it contains.

    1. Hi Richard.
Il Veliero is a great call, such a smooth, shimmering take on a classic Battisti tune, and it fits this corner of disco perfectly. You’re right about the genre too: for all the throwaway moments, disco still delivered a stack of monumental grooves that have never really lost their shine.
      Cheers.
