100 Greatest Songwriters (A Butterboy Compilation) (4 x CD's)
This list of songwriter was inspired by an article from Rolling Stone magazine, The 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time, a feature published by the American magazine Rolling Stone in August 2015. The list presented was compiled based on the magazine's music critics. It predominantly features American and English songwriters of the rock era.
The list received mixed response from fellow publications. Writing for Flavorwire, Judy Berman criticized the selection of the songwriters, saying "Predictably, it's over 70% white and features only nine solo female songwriters (five other women are included as part of mixed-gender writing teams). Classic rock is over-represented; every other genre and sub-genre of popular music is underrepresented." Geeta Dayal from The Guardian accused "corporate sponsorship" in determining the list's content. Tom Moon from NPR wrote that "This list represents another trip through the hagiography, hermetically sealed rock hall of fame, with the same stars you've been reading about in Rolling Stone since the dinosaur age." The Daily Telegraph editor Martin Chilton responded with a list of 100 best songwriters missed out by Rolling Stone, including Cole Porter, Townes Van Zandt, Ewan MacColl, Kate Bush, and Ray Charles. [Agreed] (NEW Compilation to follow Next week)
Dylan wrote "A song is like a dream, and you try to make it come true,"... "They're like strange countries that you have to enter." And so we do, marveling at the sights, over and over again.
Prince said “Attention to detail makes the difference between a good song and a great song. And I meticulously try to put the right sound in the right place, even sounds that you would only notice if I left them out. Sometimes I hear a melody in my head, and it seems like the first color in a painting. And then you can build the rest of the song with other added sounds. You just have to try to be with that first color, like a baby yearns to come to its parents. That’s why creating music is really like giving birth. Music is like the universe: The sounds are like the planets, the air and the light fitting together."
John Lennon said “Songwriting is about getting the demon out of me. It’s like being possessed.”
However which way a song is written it is the skill the writer has to make us see something that moves us. Here is the list mostly inspired by The Rolling Stone magazine article in August 2015.

Thanks, Butter - this looks like a great collection... and I agree with the critics as well. Next week's compilation should an eye - I mean, ear-opener.
ReplyDeleteMaybe, time permitting (don't overload yourself, Butter!), it would be interesting to see the results of a Butterboy Compilations Readers' Poll of the hundred greatest songwriters. Let each reader list a maximum of ten favorite songwriters of theirs; then stack and shuffle the results, insert select tracks (option: readers could offer their favorite recording of that favorite songwriter as well), stir and baste... ding! Voila; instant (and more realistic) compilation.
Sure, there'll be plenty of overlap with the Rolling Stone and anti- Rolling Stone comps... but the icons and rock-god(desse)s will likely have far less of a presence, and we'll see what the reeeaall peepul like, not just the crickets. Er, critics.
Hi Aging Child.
DeleteThis weeks Comp is a fine list but to my liking more should be added, some replaced and some omitted (which I did). However over all a great set of songs exist here on this compilation. The following Box of 4 will include some names that should not surprise.
I love your idea to have those who visit the site to contribute to a readers poll. This could be a very interesting list. The more I think about it the more I like the possibilities. I hope it doesn't get out of hand. let me mull over it and get the ball rolling...
Cheers.
I think one of the reasons your compilations are so well received - especially the "deep cuts" collections - is that most commercial best-ofs are *too* commercial, and invariably omit some great charting releases... yet include vaguer and weaker releases. The two official Kenny Rogers collections you very kindly and quickly shared, recently, were fine and comprehensive... yet still lacked a couple tracks that deserved to be included (e.g., his "What About Me" with Kim Carnes and James Ingram).
DeleteThat's not a complaint - it underscores, in fact, the fine results a little more peronal attention gives... hence the steady stream of traffic to Butterboy Compilations. And something poll-driven - workload and other commitments permitting! - should yield intriguing and rewarding selections, too.
Lead on, Butter - have a great weekend, and thanks for all your work and generosity!
You are correct Aging Child,
DeleteThere are many greatest hits, Best Of's that are lacking , even though they clearly represent an artists catalog and most played hits. I also like the lesser known tracks by an artist. That gives depth into an artists music, some tracks being better than the "Hits".
You also enjoy the weekend. This is the first day in about 8 weeks I have have had time to breath freely. I'll spend it listening to new music.
Cheers.
Great comp, looking forward to your complementary companion collection (try saying that 3 times fast!).
ReplyDeleteHi Gummo,
Deletecomplementary companion collection, complementary companion collection, complementary companion collection. :)
Cheers.
