  BIRTH OF SOUL

VA - Birth Of Soul Vol. 01 - Vol. 04 [1996-2007] (4 x CD's)

This fantastic 'Birth Of Soul' series from 'Kent/Ace' records combines the unheard and astounding with the familiar yet evocative. There are so many top songs on these CD's it's hard to pick out favorites.  An alluring assortment of late 50's and early 60's black music that heralded the 60's soul explosion of this very successful series, collates many tracks that fall between other musical niches. Change and innovation are often tricky subjects to take in one's stride, and nowhere was this more apparent than in the hyper-activity of musical creativity unleashed in the black American music circles of the early 60's. The move from R&B into the richer pastures of soul took time, effort and sometimes courage in the face of critics who saw it as 'selling out'. Outstanding. (Amazon)

  5. Very great collection, indeed! But a lot of the artists selected by KENT/ACE are not representing "The Birth Of Soul" that evolved of Rhythm & Blues and Gospel at the end of the fifties.
Artists as Otis Redding, Garnet Mimms, Jimmy Hugues, Betty Harris or William Bell represent the great and mature soul music of the sixties.
    Greetings from France.

    1. Otis Redding - In 1958, he joined Johnny Jenkins's band, the Pinetoppers, with whom he toured the Southern states as a singer.

Garnet Mimms first recorded as a member of the Norfolk Four, for Savoy Records in 1953.

Jimmy Hughes - born in 1938 - began singing in a gospel quartet, The Singing Clouds, while at high school.

Betty Harris (born in 1939 and recording in her 'teens') was a member of "The Hearts" (which included Theresa Chatman, Mandy Hopper, Lezli Green, Mary Green, Betty Crews And Ann King), releasing I Want Your Love Tonight / Like, Later Baby in 1958.

William Bell, born 1939, considered himself a student of The Soul Stirrers (who originally formed in 1926, with the popular gospel group led by Sam Cooke from 1950). At aged ten, he began songwriting the original composition, “Alone On A Rainy Night”. At the age of 14, Bell won a talent contest and began making a name for himself singing in Memphis area clubs.

He made his first leap into the music scene backing Rufus Thomas. In 1957, Bell recorded his first sides as a member of the Del Rios, the Memphis group which started in the '50s, with their first recording of the song Bell had written called "Alone on a Rainy Nite" released in late 1956.

These artists grew up in, with and around Gospel and 'original' RnB, performing for many years before ever having any commercial success.

So, I have to assume you mean that the artists on these 4 CD's only had commercial success in the 60's.

However, these CD's were put together by Kent/ACE records, whose history is deeply tied to Northern Soul in the UK, and relate directly to "The Birth of Soul", but I can appreciate that you might not be aware of this.

And yet, just showing the artists you named, it's easy to see that they were part of "The Birth of Soul" in the US too.

I do hope I have managed to explain why Kent with these artists were able to entitle them then as "The Birth of Soul" :)

    2. Hi puw,

I well know that these five artists began their career in the fifties.

But the songs selected are from the sixties and therefore are not part of "The Birth of Soul" that began ten years before :

      - Otis Redding - Pain In My heart (1964)
      - Garnet Mimms - Cry Baby (1963)
      - Jimmy Hugues - I'm Qualified (1962)
      - William Bell - Any Other Way (1962)
      - Betty Harris - Cry To Me (1963).

In harmony with the title, KENT/ACE would have chosen songs of the time you mention for more congruity.

I'm aware of the link of KENT with Northern Soul, but I don't see the relation with "The Birth of Soul". Unless that word had an other sense for you.

      Cordially.

    3. Yes, this is like the whole issue of genre's Racati, since genre's have become so overlapping and splintered, and people's perception of what music lies in which (I have to laugh when I see things like 'Brutal Death Metal' as opposed to gentle, humane alive metal lol), that an album's title can often be linked to 'click bait' type headlines.

However, Kent's close and long association with Northern Soul (the longest running underground music scene in the world) which is a maze of splintered genre's in itself, means it built itself a reputation of discovering unissued and very rare and collectible soul music for the Northern Soul scene, which means the U.K. That's where it's roots lie and it's core clients. So getting your hands on a 'Kent Soul' release is directly UK related, nothing to do with any 'British Soul', because Northern Soul derives from the initial import of late 50's & early 60's African-American music, hence why Mod's and Northern soul are so often associated with each other, because the origins of the music being listened to were from the same source ............ and then diverged, Northern Soul digging the crates for sounds that never got 'their' chance to be commercially successful, no matter how incredible they were. But that's a different chapter lol.

So if they'd instead used a title of 'The Birth of British Soul", you'd assume something it isn't, and yet you've assumed the title means something different to what it is, because you're taking The Birth of SOUL to be a specif place, time & artists, but the context is Kent = UK = Northern Soul.

Now if this was released by ACE Records, they formed this label so as to be able to do exactly what you were thinking these albums with this title would be.

Now you may ask .......... 'Why didn't they call it 'The Birth of Northern Soul' then? Because these songs aren't, though many form its origins (which I must say reads like a contradiction, but shows you can't judge an album by it's title LOL).

So the tracks on these four volumes may be 'too late' in time to be at the 'original birth', but they're full of both the artists who were and the many sounds that are 'true' Soul. It's kind of like getting one of those Atlantic Soul compilation CD's. They're full of commercial soul to appeal to the masses, while Kent goes in the opposite direction, because of its roots. Tell me, if you saw an ACE CD title called "The King of Rock and Roll", which (single) artist would you assume it contained? While Kent released "The King of Soul", would you assume it was just about one artist or would it be an album about a record label associated with early soul music? To understand Kent, is not to understand Northern Soul, it's to have been a part of Northern Soul. Good chat :)
