 BANNED

VA - This Record Is Not To Be Broadcast, 75 Records Banned By The BBC 1931-1957 [2008] (3 x CDs)

Based on the Theme, this is a very hilarious boxset of three CD's that tells more about RADIO BBC than the records. Some of these recordings are so harmless that you will have to read the comments about Why these were banned. I have records that would have been indeed more suitable to fit into this category. I will say it is "easy listening" and not very obscure or vulgar. It you know how the "language" was back then and translate all these "not nice" recordings - such as "Work with me Annie" you may find some obscene. I could name at least 3 Top 10 50's rock songs that is more "vulgar" than these included: "Shake, Rattle and Roll" - "Tutti Frutti" (that doesn't mean ice-cream...) "Long Tall Sally" (one of the first transsexual songs).  The clever part about this set is the theme: Banned by the BBC. There is a very interesting book included with the set that includes a description of why each record was banned, including some quotes from BBC memos. It is a fascinating look into the bureaucratic workings of the government body that controlled British broadcasting for so long.  (Amazon)

  1. You do have the knack for the off-beat and obscure. Thank God for that.
    But mostly, thanks BB.

  2. The George Hamilton IV song was almost assuredly banned because the BBC wouldn't allow product mentions. The Kinks had to change 'Coca Cola" to "cherry cola" in the song "Lola" to get them to play it.

    1. It's the Baby Ruth version that should've been included. That was the banned one.

  3. Thanks bb...BBC..what else is new...Survives on taxpayer dime, place where Jimmy Savile sought refuge for years while carrying out his monstrous acts.BBC- make me sick to my stomach.

  4. BBC also banned stuff for glutinous religiosity, eg Unbeliever, Answer Me, St Teresa etc so it wasn't all bad. Deep in the heart of Texas was banned because factory workers bashed their implements in time to the percussion break.
Jimmy Savile took refuge with Margaret Thatcher.
The BBC runs the Proms. 120 concerts in the summer. Hate too?

  5. I'm very curious about this banned music. Unfortunately a major storm knocked the power out here (some areas are still without electricity) and we didn't get it back until three days later. Would it be possible to re-upload these degenerate tunes? It would be greatly appreciated.

"This site can’t be reached, pixeldrain.com took too long to respond."
(First time this has happened with them.)

    2. Thanks for that and also for including the booklet because in this case, context is everything. What might or might not be of interest is that the Jimmie Rodgers song Honeycomb (in altered form and also sung by him) went on to be used in advertisements for a breakfast cereal in the US of the same name aimed at kids in the 1960s. I knew the song from the commercial long before I ever heard the record on oldies radio later on.

    3. Yes, I agree, Ronzoni. The booklet makes this more enjoyable, contextually.
      Cheers.
