PROGRESSIVE FOLK
VA - Progressive Folk Vol. 03 (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3
Progressive Rock, not to be mistaken for the Folk Rock of the 1960s, a Folk revival started on both sides of the Atlantic, that got quickly linked with a protest movement, not always, but often linked to more left-wing tendencies, which did not sit well with the authorities. With their delicious harmonies, Folk Rock was appealing only to the rock public as older generations turned their backs in folkies.
However, a real turning point album that led to further change of Folk Rock is Fairport Convention's "Liege & Lief" album, that proved to be highly influential for another generation of groups: this album concentrated into electrifying seminal English traditional folk and retained that quaint Englishness taste. It is interesting to see that both leaders of Fairport Convention quit the band after this success to go their respective ways. By this time, most connoisseurs were talking of Acid Folk, Psych Folk, and Progressive Folk, all having limited differences and no particularly drawn-out limits or boundaries, but all relying on experimental or groundbreaking adventures and good musicianship but not necessarily of an acoustic nature. Those who were out to break new ground (but with less commercial success as their predecessors) started turning records more and more axed towards fusing jazz and folk, others became more and more electric, and they started to be referred to as Singer Songwriters especially those with country rock influences. There is also a very important medieval music influences dimension in some groups as the term Medieval Folk was also mentioned for a while but apparently dropped by musicologists. Many European bands took folk rock to a higher level and combined music that was folky, experimental and progressive. I aways wonder if the English bands cherry picked from the European progressive rock scene or visa versa. Probably a bit of both.
Many Progressive Rock bands/artists incorporated Folk music in their compositions. Some are amazingly good and it's a pity that they don't get heard all that often. This compilation concentrates on Progressive Rock music with a Folk sound from around the globe from the last 5 decades that is captivating and as well as enjoyable.
This is Volume 3 of a 3 Volume set. Enjoy!

Got to listen to the entire set. I must say before I heard these comps (and the one I put together awhile ago) I never had any interest what so ever in Prog Folk. Now I'm intrigued with it all. Looking for more on Forest and especially Decameron, a new discovery for me. Thanks for a well-researched set!
ReplyDeleteHi Wombat Freddie.
DeleteIt amazes me how enjoyable these are, listen after listen. That folky sound lends itself to prog rock.
Decameron and Forest both have a great sound.
Cheers.
Good music whatever the label. Thanks
ReplyDeleteThanks, lemonflag.
DeleteCheers.
Hello. I stumbled across your site recently and I must say it is amazing, as is your music collection and knowledge of that collection. There is just so much to check out. How do you find time to upload so much? You must be old and/or retired?!?!? You must enjoy creating these "mixtapes" to share? Many years ago I spent lots of time creating mixtape CDs for my kids containing My favourite songs, ripped individually from my vinyl collection. I'm sure it was appreciated? I thought I'd thank you in this post because of the mention of Decameron & Forest. Back in 1974 I promoted Decameron at college as back up to the Michael Chapman Band (although he actually played solo). Great band. Of course Forest were on Harvest for a while, as was Michael and one of my all time favs, Roy Harper. So thanks again for posting all this music, John
ReplyDeleteHi John,
DeleteThanks for your kind words and thoughts. It is truly appreciated.
1974 would have been a great time for you. I hope you look around this site as you find some hard to find and interesting music to listen to. I usually post one new Butterboy compilation each week. Retired - yes, Old - only in body.
Cheers.
Thanks BB. Saw Pentangle as the first listing, then Lindisfarne, Harmonium, good old JT et al. Have to hear where the rest go.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, hedspace.
DeleteI am glad you grab all three volumes. I still enjoy listening to these.
Cheers.
