GO-BETWEENS
Go-Betweens - G Stands for Go-Betweens Volume 1 (1978-1984) [2015] + G Stands for Go-Betweens Volume 2 (1985-1989) [2019] (16 x CD's)
The Go-Betweens were an Australian indie rock band formed in Brisbane, Queensland, in 1977. The band was co-founded and led by singer-songwriters and guitarists Robert Forster and Grant McLennan, who were its only constant members throughout its existence. Drummer Lindy Morrison joined the band in 1980, and its lineup would later expand to include bass guitarist Robert Vickers and multi-instrumentalist Amanda Brown. Vickers was replaced by John Willsteed in 1987, and the quintet lineup remained in place until the band split two years later. Forster and McLennan reformed the band in 2000 with a new lineup that did not include any previous personnel aside from them. McLennan died on 6 May 2006 of a heart attack and the Go-Betweens disbanded again. In 2010, a toll bridge in their native Brisbane was renamed the Go Between Bridge after them.
G Stands For Go-Betweens Volume 1 documents the band’s origins in four LP, four CDs and an 112-page book, featuring photos and extensive liner notes. This volume documents them from 1978 to 1984 with vinyl re-pressings of their first three studio albums (Send Me A Lullaby, Before Hollywood & Spring Hill Fair). It also collects their early 7” output on a fourth LP entitled The First Five Singles. Additionally, the set comes with four CDs of rare and unreleased demos, radio sessions and a complete live concert radio broadcast from 1982. This a beautiful, loving treatment of one of the greatest bands to come out of Australia. G Stands For Go-Betweens Volume 1 comprehensively documents the formative years of an enigmatic and fascinating group. It’s very exciting to hear the restless band struggling and learning. Volume 2 will certainly be filled with some of the Go-Betweens best music, but it will tell the story of a band who have grown up and comfortably settled into a hard-earned identity. It will be hard to top Volume 1. (Amazon)
G Stands for Go-Betweens Volume 2 The first box – long out-of-print, and now very expensive to get hold of covered the era 1978 to 1984 and this new set, as you might expect, picks up where that earlier volume left off, with an examination of the period 1985-1989 which closed the chapter on the original version of the band (Robert Forster and Grant McLennan reformed The Go-Betweens in 2000 with a new line-up). It contains the three studio albums released during this era on vinyl LP – Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express (1986), Tallulah (1987) and 16 Lovers Lane (1988), and adds a previously unreleased double live album, called Fountains of Youth, recorded in London on 10 May 1987. But as before, this is a real multi-media package and more music comes in the form of five CDs, which feature not only rare, hard-to-find and unreleased demos, recordings, radio sessions but also a collection of 28 songs intended for what was supposed to be the follow-up to 16 Lovers Lane. This Volume two package comes with a 112-page book with all the usual historical photos and extensive sleeve notes (from founding member Robert Forster) and a Liberty Belle And The Black Diamond Express songbook. This was apparently prepared at the time of release by their publisher, but never actually produced. So this is the first ever printing, containing hand-transcribed sheet music of all ten songs from that album. The box set, a big lift-off lid affair, also comes with a reproduction promotional poster. I adore this band. I was very shocked when McLennan passed away. Thanks a lot BB, this is really a part of my life.
ReplyDeleteHi Herve,
DeleteA fantastic group which I also love.
I posted this previously a few years ago, but it was taken off, so I am glad you have it.
Cheers.
Hi BB. Couldn't agree more with Hervé, excellent document. Thank you for this!
ReplyDeleteHi StoneRose.
DeleteWe are all on the same page.
Cheers.
You're welcome, blureu.
ReplyDeleteCheers.
Another brilliant (underrated) Australian Band and from Brisbane! Long before I made my way across to the other side of the planet to live in Sunny Brisvegas, I saw the Go-Betweens a number of times when they were based in UK for a while. These Box sets are quite brilliant...I'm awaiting a hinted at Volume three!
ReplyDeleteCheers
Stephen
